Thought the very base level thing that started WW1 (and many other wars) was conflict over religion... (the archduke getting shot, sounds religiously motivated to me) or was WW1 the exception?

no... the reason why world war 1 started was because the systems of motivation and bankrolling and being the godfathers of fledging states.serbian was bank rolled by russia, and because mobilisation had to occur, and russia's vastness, meant that germany got involved too...
