Is there any reason why Chris is playing the pips before the news - or are they just for comic effect?

Being the breakfast show, lots of people are busy getting ready while listening. As people are usually wanting to run on time in the morning, having the pips to know when its "exactly 8 oclock" is very handy.

I thought that maybe he got told off for always being late for the news etc, so now this is just a "look, I am always on time" sort of piss take...

In melons and figs - are they pips or just seeds? I never know whether to eat watermelon pips/seeds but they don't taste bad so don't bother plucking them out. Figs are OK - although after a few bites it feels like you are eating an eggshell....

Maybe to do with you can plant seeds and get a plant related to the seed and you can't get anything with pips?
