bob- osama bin laden was not the head of the taliban, he supported them though. he's a rogue.

that american girl is an idiot as are most americans. especially about northern ireland. every single st. patrick's day in high school, i came to school in an orange shirt with some unionist slogan on it just to be obnoxious. only two people in my entire 4 year stint there got it- 1 called be an obnoxious little b*tch and found it mildly amusing, the other sent me out of his class because he said it was offensive to his irish herritage. that was fine, i hated his class.

the point is that most americans really don't think there is much of anything beyond our borders, or if there is it's just an immitation of american culture. i see this as hubris. most of american culture is an amalgam of others. it's why the average american doesn't know who jaques chirac is, or that there was an assasination attempt on him this weekend, nor would they care about general musharif.

sometimes i feel sorta cowardly for how i act with british culture. am i that ashamed of american culture? is british culture any better? i don't know. there are tons of little anglophiles like myself out there, but most of them go insofar as to like britpop, drink tea, and eat fish-n-chips once in a while. i'm slightly more pretentious than that i worry as i listen to radio1 and radio4, read the times and guardian online, drink lucozade, and frequent message boards like this. it's stupid really, but it does make me more globally conscience. i mean, the foriegn news in british news papers is loads better than that in american papers. it just shows how isolated america likes to think of itself- as if it leagues above any other nation.

i cooked a sausage dinner for my exboyfriend and roommate sunday- he liked them. my new roommate said "typical british crap." i thought they were really good myself. she's just a minging francophile who's stinking up the room. i might see if i can cook my parents bangers and mash this weekend. i think i've got it down to an art.

i think its great that people can still be that thick. time and again america produces people that prove the human race has developed a way of overcoming darwins natural selection. when a complete moron can be in charge of the most powerful country in the world i say its what we fought the nazis for.

I would just like to point out that although Americans tend to be very insular, examples of American stupidity tends to be limited to the trailer trash; after all, some of the worlds most emminent professors are American, and Harvard and Yale are amongst the most respected universities in the world. I often feel that all Americans are tarred with the same brush, just because of stupid trailer trash.
After all, the lower classes in the UK don't know much about other countries either. To the working classes, going abroad isn't about enjoying another countries culure and lifestyle, but to go somewhere that's hot and where there's an easy shag.
I used to have a friend who was from New Zealand, and when he went to school in the UK - admittedly it was a comprehensive - people were intrigued by the fact he came from New Zealand; whilst a lot of the people got New Zealand and the Netherlands mixed up, others asked such intelligent questions as 'What language do they speak in New Zealand?' and 'When you go home, do you speak to your family in New Zealandish?'.

I saw an American girl interviewed on telly a few years back and she thought that the English language was invented by the Americans and that the English learnt it after that. Hmmmm, says it all really.

That's mostly to do with the way American kids are taught, that their country is always right, and invented everything. Okay that may be a slight exaggeration however...

if you read an American history textbook it is incredibly biased in their dealings with such country's as Korea or Vietnam. An example a my history lecturer gave us ages ago was an account on World War Two and Americas involvement. It was exaggerated beyond belief.

Also, see such films as 'Black Hawk Down'.

Show them a couple of episodes of Eastenders (past & present). What with Beeanka shouting Rickaaaaay and the Slater sisters shouting "just stay aat of it will ya!" the septics will soon realise some of us are, in fact, proles.

americans can watch eastenders, but it's mostly the posh americans (ha!) as it's on public televion- home of all the dull programmes on free tv.

as an american this is what i've learned about our involvement in the world- we are always the protector. the monroe doctrine was written to keep the british from opressing people in the western hemisphere (and allowing americans to do so for them), without us "the allies" would have lost both ww1 and ww2, we are not imperial scum but the brits (and for the more enlightened, the french as well) are, we lost vietnam because of interference from the chinese and russians, we never speak of korea (honestly, in my entire career in the us school system it was only mentioned a handfull of times in both us and world history classes), the gulf war was a success, we are heroes, we are the best nation of the planet due to all of our 'civil liberties', and i could go on.

the best is what was going on in 1776. you say "war for independence" we say "revolutionary war", but i think we missed the revolution. i can't wait to argue this point next semester when i take a class on the american colonies- independence.

I was just thinking about US culture in general, and it struck me that the Americans have a perpensity for making everything larger than life: cars, stores, burgers etc.

This got me thinking: is this some sort of unconscious effort to try and make themselves feel that they are, indeed, the greatest? Is it actually a conscious effort to try andprove to the rest of the world that they are the most powerful nation on earth?

I think too much. 8)

america refuses to cut its emision of pollution and american produces the most pollution in the world.
If america is the biggest, most powerful and mighty nation then it must be their responsabilty? but of course they would loose money so they dont want that do they.

Kendra aint the american stereotype,id say shes open minded

That's a very valid point GTWD has made there. Take BB's Jade for example. In America, she'd probably be in the house of senate or something. Here, she only gets on a reality TV show, and that's probably just through some flawy in the system.
