As we prepare to pay up £180 just to pay for our telly fees do you think it's time the BBC started screening adverts thus scrapping the license fee altogether?

Hell no, the great thing about the bbc is that they don't have adverts on TV and the radio.

yeah the main reason that bbc radio in particular is good is because they have to do certain things because we pay for it not advertisers. and no adverts is good as well.

some commercial radio stations might be ok, but the adverts always put me off and I instantly turn over....I'd hate it for Radio 1 to suddenly have ads on

Its actually £150, and even then it isn't coming in until the entire country is on the digital tv platform - the country will have access to more services from the BBC so a raise in price is fair I think

Yup adverts pee me off especially when you are watching a film.

The worst is when they take a break in a film to put on the news. That really pees me off.

bbc radio would lose a lot of listeners, I mean not that many national commercial radio stations do well (e.g 1215am Virgin Radio)

That's because its on AM, rather than FM. There are no national commercial radio stations on FM (the exception is Classic FM, due to lack of competition for Radio 3) as apart from the BBC you can only get a commerical licence to cover one or two big cities on any one frequency

£150 a year works out at 41p a day. I'd pay that just for Neighbours.

The BBC does a lot of stuff i disagree with but I say keep the licence fee. There was a good point made today about the expense of things such as making stuff available online and on mobiles when the biggest group of users probably wont even be directly paying the licence fee. Pensioners get a bit of a raw deal.

This concept that the stuff they make from the merchandising is separate from the licence fee. Thats rubbish because without the licence fee they would have no basis to do that.

Also its shares in some of the digital channels that do show adverts.

you ask this on a BBC Radio 1 person's message board?

adverts kill the radio, that's why local radio is so bad.

Ridding of the license fee would be the biggest mistake.

BBC Radio and TV with adverts!? It would look good for the commercial stations, but not for the consumer. Why should the average joe sit through pointless commerical TV/Radio junk? (e.g. ITV Daytime - ie. Dial-a-mum [what the hell!?]).

If the license stays, the public should have more of a say/opinion that counts of what is needed.

How exactly would you rectify that though? The merchendise is done by a seperate company (2 Entertain who took over BBC worldwide I think) whose profit from which makes more merchendise rather than refunding the BBC proper. You can't exactly give a rebate on merchendise products - but there is also a clear demand for the products as well so you couldn't stop making them either

Also, pensioners get a disount on the lisence fee, although I don't know how much it is. Not too much I would expect.

Because it's an integral part of the station, they don't want people missing out on upcoming shows and events. However I do hate it whenever they trail Five Live.

thats rubbish. theres no way the bbc just has an endless cycle of money reinvesting in merchandise or why bother with it at all?

Well all the profits go back to BBC worldwide/2entertain and not the BBC proper. If they use it to pump out more merchendise or not is irrelivant

yeah and thats my point. BBC Worldwide is wrong.
