For the morons, freeware means it doesn't cost anything...

Download the free version

Hmmmm, not sure about that. What kind of a business model is that? Giving stuff away for free? How on earth do Google make money then? Sounds like I'm not the moron here...

There is a free version and a pay version munroe. The pay version doesn't add anything usefull that the everyday person will need. Good old google!

It needs a broadband connection to run well as it downloads the images instead of storing them all on your pc (though it does a bit of that too). I suggest looking for your house when you get it too, that always fun.

Tips:
1. To find somewhere type the place you want to find in the "fly to" box in the top left (EG. type Area 51 in there and it will take you there)
2. Its not live! if you go outside and wave you wont see it. Some of the images are 5 years old some even more!
3. Check out the community for help and interesting places to visit and do (http://bbs.keyhole.com) Keyhole is what it use to be called.
4. Have fun...and go exploring without leaving your chair!
5. Also try:
http://local.live.com/ - windows take on google earth (require no software)
http://maps.yahoo.com/beta/ - Yahoos version (also no software)
These have different image datebases to google and therefore you see different things in different ones.

They do have some services you pay for but make the most of their money from advertising. You really are the moron here.

There's plenty of free software you can get legally.

It makes its money from the pay version that many companies use for various reasons and also I think google can afford it!

(Google earth also includes the google business directory. When you find your house try typing Pizza in the fly to box and it will show you all the pizza places around - or at least the ones registered with google)

I've downloaded google earth but i keep getting a message about not enough space on my hard drive to install it. Is this because it's freeware?

Not sure mate, it worked for me. But to be fair you can't expect it to work 100% of the time if it is free. What are you gonna do, ask for a refund?! lol

He wasn't, he was asking stupid questions... Even for the unaware, freeware implies free of charge.

Thanks for your help. I'm not very good at this computer lark and it's nice to have someone offer friendly advice. I have google earth installed now. Going to give it a go.

Make sure you you check out the little check-boxes on the bottom left, and turn everything on.

Some Cool places to check out:

Botswana (all the little plane icons in Africa), Ayers Rock, New York, Rome, London, Nazca Lines, Pyramids of Giza, Niagara Falls.

Have Fun!

Did it cost you anything Captain? Im concerned that as it is freeware, there may be some underlying reason for me to install it... ie, a hidden KeyLogger which if I were to do internet banking in the future would give those internet geeks at Google access to my bank account...

No Furious it was free. It even puts some strange turquoise icon on your desktop. If you double click on it you will see the whole world in real time pictures. I advise people to get this ASAP. I think admin should make this thread a sticky also.

If the link doesn't work, you can type 'Google Earth' as a search term at http://www.google.com, and the first result will take you to the site where you can download the software. Enjoy it! It's very interesting!

On a side note. I find it awful that this software is using company names on the planet earth. It's political correctness gone mad!!
