Just like at last years One Big Weekend in Cardiff, Chris hosted a two hour Sunday night highlights package showcasing the best of this weekend’s One Big Weekend in Derry. However unlike last year, Dave was alongside him to look back over the last couple of days, as well as Rachel and Aled who were also hanging around like a bad smell. There’s not actually much to review in truth as there were only 8 links in the full two hours, but I thought a brief summary wouldn’t go amiss for all the hardcore listeners out there.
Following a phone conversation with Wes near the climax of the chart, Chris and co skipped and jumped over from the site at Prehen Playing Fields back into the BBC Radio Foyle studios in Derry. Croaky Chris and Dave were praising the weekend virtually non stop, in particular Dave’s birthday party at Earth on Saturday night. Faithless popped along for a couple of drinks and Dave said he had a great time, although he couldn’t remember getting back to the hotel let alone going to bed. Chris also thoroughly enjoyed the party but said his only complaints were that the music was too loud and the air con was knackered. Today at The Bands Day Chris had introduced the loveGods on stage early doors before pegging it back backstage to watch Leeds get beaten 2-1 by Pompey on the big Sky screen. Chris wouldn’t talk about this (surprise surprise) but said it was no coincidence that the black clouds came hovering over Derry at that point. They did go away though and the weather was gorgeous for the rest of the day (although let’s face it they were stuck in a huge tent so didn’t have much of an idea). While Chris’s voice was strained, croaky and high pitched, butch Aled was sounding very masculine indeed.
Chris - Can I just say you do sound really butch Aled?
Aled - Really?
Dave - It’s not like you at all actually
Chris - Can you just say into the mic “the best a man can get”? (drops bed)
Aled (trying to sound manly) - ...The best a man can get
Chris (fades up bed) - OK maybe not
Dave (takes the pee in camp welsh voice) - The best a man can get
(Chris, Rachel and Aled laugh)
Aled - All right, leave it out
Aled said he was shouting so much during Faithless last night his voice had lost all it’s usual campness. Chris said Faithless were truly sensational (as he’d predicted) and he played We Come One, which is probably their best live track. Chris also played live tracks from Kelis and Franz Ferdinand, both of whom Aled interviewed backstage in his role as breakfast show showbiz reporter today. Chris played out clips of his interview with Alex and Bob from FF, plus his interview with Tim and Mark from Ash on board their tour bus. He didn’t have any clips from Kelis though as Aled said they just didn’t bond or get on at all...and he said she was really difficult as she gave one word answers to each question. This goes some way to proving what I’ve thought all along (she’s a bit of a cow) but Aled said she got on really well with Vernon and his crew earlier in the day. Vernon’s exec producer Hannah Brown (Rachel’s knitting partner-in-crime) is apparently also going to teach Kelis how to knit. Chris said he had a great story about Vernon breaking his bed (he never told it) and also revealed the pair of them took part in an 8 Mile esque free-style rap competition on the stage earlier.
As well as playing out highlights montages and interview clips from the likes of Judge Jules, Seb Fontaine, Sister Bliss, Agnelli and Nelson and the very funny (but only cos of his accent) Armin Van Buren, Chris played the two previously unheard sets of the day - from headliners Ash and Avril Lavigne. Both sounded excellent and the atmosphere sounded even better. Avril did her four previous singles, her great new single Don’t Tell Me (which has grown on me so much), two new records from the new album and Unwanted from the previous one. More importantly she sounded up for it and happy to be there, something you don’t often expect with her. Ash were back on home turf and on top form too, although they didn’t play Girl From Mars which was a pity. They made up for it though with Sometimes, Shining Light, Burn Baby Burn and a unique Thin Lizzy cover...featuring Colin Murray (supposedly on BV’s). Chris said it was probably the best cover he’s ever heard on Radio 1 or seen live, although he wasn’t sure exactly how much Colin actually contributed to the song.
*Tim Wheeler from Ash will be popping in for a chat on the show tomorrow, which for the final time is coming live from BBC Radio Foyle in Derry. There will be all the stories from the weekend, the usual features such as Buzz Off, Wes’s Chart Recap, Tedious Link and Carpark Catchphrase - plus, the winner of The Chris Moyles Approved Workplace Scheme will be announced. Check back here for the review which will have all details covered.
