Well I have to say, it’s been a great week of Moyles this week, he’s been on top form, despite having to tone the show down a little on Wednesday(RIP John Peel), and he didn’t disappoint today either.
Another location change today as Chris, Dave and Rachel were in London’s Maida Vale studios, the reason being the excellent Travis are performing live on the show this morning, more on that later.
A discussion after the 7.00 news about Travis, Chris was asking the team who their favourite member of Travis was. Dom said Fran or Dougie, Carrie’s was Fran, Danny’s was Fran as well. Carrie’s second favourite was Dougie, Danny’s was also Dougie. Carrie’s third was Andy, Danny’s was the one with the hair, oh yeah, him! Not the kind of conversation you need to wake you up in the morning.
Travis have all their equipment set up in the studio, 11 guitars they have. Which Chris can’t understand, as they’re only doing two songs. He thinks they’re just showing off, they don’t need that many. Rachel says perhaps they need back up incase a string snaps, Chris says they could just re-string it, didn’t really think that one through did you Rach? Although she says it would take too long, yeah, good point! The conversation somehow got round to Dire Straits, I think I completely lost track at this point!
BUZZ OFF:
Even Jocelyn and Danny took part today. The record was Perfect 10 by Beautiful South, released in 1998. Ever since then, I could never quite make up my mind whether I liked it or not. No hesitation from Rachel, Dave or Aled though as they all buzzed it off straight away. Rach hates The Beautiful South. Fair enough. Chris thought it was brilliant, he thinks the Beautiful South rock! Rock what? Chairs? Not a popular choice though, sorry Chris. And a bit of a let down after yesterday’s hilarious Buzz Off!
FRIDAY FOOTIE COMP:
This week’s game was West Brom – Chelsea. Tickets were for the West Brom end.
The two brummies were Charlie, a sales rep for a beer company, so naturally Chris was on his side! And Catherine, who works in a call centre for a big bank, so she really needs a good weekend. Charlie won with his sob story, saying he was taking his Dad, who took him to his first game, and never gets to go anymore. The listeners would normally do this, but it’s up to the team to vote today. Rach chose Catherine, Chris called her sexist. Hint of the pot and kettle there I think. Aled also chose Catherine, because Rachel said so. Dave went for Charlie, Fergus was told by Chris to pick Charlie, to create some tension. The decision rests with Chris. He chose Charlie. He doesn’t think Catherine tried hard enough, and then there’s the beer…
Chris: I expect a crate by midday. No, I’m only joking…two crates.
DAVE’S EXCITING FOOTBALL NEWS:
For some strange reason, Chris and Dave are going to be doing the score predictions on BBC Grandstand tomorrow afternoon, as Ray Stubbs apparently rang up the “Chris Moyles Show Office” yesterday. They will predict the scores for 7 of tomorrow’s games, and see how they get on against the “proper” pundits such as Garth Crooks, Steve McMahon…and Carlton Palmer of course. They thought they’d have a bit of a practise…
CHRIS AND DAVE’S FOOTIE PREDICTIONS:
Birmingham City V Crystal Palace
Chris: Home Win, Dave: Home Win
Arsenal V Southampton
Chris: Home Win, Dave: Home Win
Charlton V Middlesborough
Chris: Draw, Dave: Away Win
Everton V Aston Villa
Chris: Draw, Dave: Home Win(Naturally!)
Fulham V Tottenham
Chris: Away Win, Dave: Draw
Portsmouth V Man United
Chris: Away Win, Dave: Away Win
West Brom V Chelsea
Chris: Draw, Dave: Away Win
So there ya go! Yet more exciting footie news from Dave to come though, even more bizarre than that, Dave is also to read the classified football results tomorrow. Why, I don’t know. It should be on at 4.45pm tomorrow if you wanna hear Dave’s voice reading the football results, I really can’t imagine it myself, but good luck Dave!
After a bit of a dull conversation about playing guitars left handed, Chris played a few clips of Travis’ sound check at 8.15. He played the instrumental for Why Does It Always Rain On Me, with Chris singing the first few lines over what was basically a keyboard instrumental, Chris thought it sounded a bit cheap.
Chris: You’re listening to the sound of Travis sound checking! Fran’s having a dump I think!
More on today’s music, isn’t that Christina/Missy song like the worst cover ever?! Just needed to get that out…
Off the top of that record, Chris revealed he’s been to the car wash they sing about in that song, according to the tour guide, but he then goes on to say how that particular tour guide turned out to be a complete liar! They were told they were driving past Robert Wagner’s house, when at that moment, a car pulls up outside, and out steps a man who looks nothing like him! About 18 stone with a bald head! She also lied about the bad guy from Superman coming out of a shop. Chris said the reason they knew she lied, was because Sophie had been to LA before, and taken photo’s of the stars homes, that failed to match this time round. He’s still thinks it MIGHT be the real car wash though, they might be right about something, oh well, at least there’s that! Chris said he’s seen The Osbourne house, and incidentally, Rachel had a dream about Ozzy last night, cue terrible impressions from Chris and Dave!
More keyboard clips from Travis, which they all thought sounded awful. Very lazy. Fran’s obviously disappeared and is refusing to sing as it’s still just an instrumental. They were in the studio at 8.45 though, Chris didn’t know their names though, and referred to them as “Singer Man”, “Drummer Man” and “T’Other Man”. Chris was taking the piss out of Fran all morning for his Mickey Mouse T-shirt. He also referred to last week on Top Of The Pops, when Chris made Fran laugh, although Chris says he didn’t do anything, but Fran said it was in the sound check, they do tend to get put off in sound checks eh? Chris said it was because they were so good live, nice save. Fran also pointed out, this is the first time Chris has had a live band on the breakfast show. “Fact” as Dave would say.
Chris and Dave both had a go on the drums, surprisingly quite good actually. Dave was better, the lads rated Dave 6.5, and Chris 3.5 out of ten. About right I think.
Fran: Have you been listening to our sound check?
Chris: No, no we haven’t! Let’s play Green Day, American Idiot on Radio 1…
Travis performed Driftwood live for the Tedious Link this morning. Probably the first time that’s been done too. It was a great performance, with no laughing from Fran and no dodgy keyboard instrumental in sight. One texter said it was the best track they ever heard. Fran-bloody-tastic! Turns out the man on the keyboard was Adam Wakeman, son of Rick Wakeman. Chris and Dave mentioned the finest piece of work he has ever done…dictionary corner on Countdown!
Half Time, the bit where Dave says:
Let’s Get Ready To Ramble!!!!!!
Aled was enjoying a bit of Travis, saying it was odd having them performing right in front of them. Chris said it was because Aled was so ugly. Chris mentioned if they performed Driftwood for the Tedious Link, then we now get three tracks from Travis this morning, a bonus track, which was supposed to be a surprise, but Rachel gave the game away earlier. She said she didn’t know what they were supposed to be doing, Chris said she should pay attention in the morning instead of messing about on her computer and doing her hair! Meetings are there to serve a purpose. That’s about it for half time this morning.
Will Kinder put together a documentary about the history of Travis, or a “rock-umentary” as it should be called. Very funny. Apparently they were named after Radio 1’s Dave Lee Travis. Fran’s uncle was Sir Francis Drake, which is why he’s rarely seen in public without his hat and cape. Of the most memorable live moments from Travis was a few years ago, when they were playing Glastonbury, and it started raining. Obviously this wasn’t unusual as the festival is always held out doors, but it happened during a song which you may know, called Why Does It Always Rain On Me? Ironic. “The band all agree that The Chris Moyles Show is great, and couldn’t ask to be doing a better gig anywhere in the world” That’s your History lesson over! Well done Will! Very accurate, as Chris said.
TRAVIS LIVE:
They performed Walking In The Sun, the great new single, live at 9.25 this morning. Chris bet Fran 50 quid that he would laugh. Fran couldn’t make it through another song though, losing it a bit towards the end, so 50 quid to Chris! Before the final song, Chris and Dave suggested they should take part in the new Band Aid song, for backing vocals, after showing off their musical talents this morning. Chris said they could do the backing vocals to any song, they played Faith by George Michael. I think they should stick to drumming. They also tried to sing along to Natasha Beddingfield, a song which everyone must know by now, as it’s been on Radio 1 probably more times than Chris himself!
So, the final track, as voted for by the listeners, was Why Does It Always Rain On Me. They asked Chris and Dave to do the backing vocals at the beginning. Once again, drumming. Another great performance from Travis though to end the show with. Classic song! Personally my favourite Travis song is Turn, but unlikely that would ever win the text vote!
Great show today! Travis were fantastic guests! A great end to the week. Don’t forget to be up bright and early on Monday morning, at 6.55am.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK
John Peel tribute, Mouldie Lookin Stain getting to number one on the download chart, Up Where We Belong Buzz Off, Aled’s Geri Interview, Carol Vorderman, Richard and Judy interview, Travis.
Best Show: Wednesday.
ALSO ON TODAY’S SHOW:
Chris played Eric Prydz again(I love those lyrics! All three words of them!)
My own personal discovery that DJ Fergie sounds like James Nesbitt
More hilarious Rach impressions!
What do you think of today's show/review? Let us know on the message board!
