Tall Pall wrote:Fan of the filter because:- it reduces peoples perpensity to swear, and stops words from being used that are offensive. The meaning can be got across with different vairations or modifications to words but the impact is reduced. This has the effect of cleaning up the board to a certain extent and stopping things from getting out of hand, perhaps.

Yeah but... there's no swear filter in real life. Why have one on the Internet?

magenta there is indeed no swear filter when you talk to people of the net. I just don’t think it’s as simple as that though.

Firstly, despite what you and I just said, yes censorship does exist off the Internet. It’s the primary example of where it’s useful. For instance “You lousy *, get a * job and get a * life you useless piece of *” erm or something similar found on an every day chat show. Unbelievably, these shows are real and you are viewing them through the magic of TV.

The reason for this censorship is that it’s an established field of thought that exposing people to uncensored behaviour at certain and even in some cases all time of day is bad for society (due to who is freely able to view this).

The TV though as you may think isn’t exactly real life, but is a mere representation. You don’t interact or exist in it, so it doesn’t matter, right? Well yes and no, maybe it’s irrelevant but isn’t it a good idea to try and set some form of standards by which we all can live by.

That’s the key issue perhaps, “that we can all live by”. Interesting isn’t it that you can say to a friend * off in a joking manner, but you wouldn’t say this to lets say a niece or nephew for the same reason. This isn’t the case obviously for everyone, but a large proportion of people act this way I think. Well for one I do, not that that is important.

I honestly believe though that in the general circumstances of the Internet, that not having some form of control over what is said is appropriate. I will calmly and politely discuss this with whoever chooses to.

The Internet is a difficult area when talking baout censorhip - after all, with things like TV most bad language, violence etc is broadcast after the watershed, as it is generally accepted that most of the people it is thought this sort of material is inappropraite for (kiddywinks basically) are not goin gto be watching.

The Internet is of course a completely different medium, and can be accessed 24 hours a day, so minors are able to view material considered unsuitable more easily. The otehr point here is that it is more difficult to control what children accessing the Internet view.

Although I don't agree with censorship in general, I think it is important that certain material, be it sexual, violent or just downright rude is not available to younger people - I know that makes me sound a littlel sad but hey, that's what I think.

When looking at this board in particular, it's important to remember that Moyles appeals to a broad audience so you are likely to get younger visitors than say, ticoc, which is aimed at people who spend their time in the pub - for this reason the only word censored on the message board for my site ia c**t, which many people find very offensive.

Chris (Harris) has a responsibility to his audience and as such has decided to filter words that could be considered unsuitable for certain ages - I think he's right to do this.

Yes some words I am really surprised are , beeped or blinged, bleeped, others well okay its common in 'polite' soceity not to use them. I think just bling the hardcore swear words wheretheres more concenus, why arse and not b i t c h .... whats the guiding principle behind this filter...

Wouldn't be much fun if Pink sang "Tried to call the nurse again, but she's being a little bitch" on R1. - jc
