Just heard the song Scooch will be singing for us in this year's Eurovision Song Contest and I think it's one of the most cheesiest songs I've ever heard in my life, I hope it gets nil point even though they're representing us, do you think Eurovision is a joke?

and is best confined to eurovision...
but then what do I know, I still think Father Ted's 'My Lovely Horse' should have been an actual entry.

Zenon and the euro contest in the same thread?? I was nearly going to jump for joy but yes it is a joke I suppose, shame it hasn't come to an end. Its a joke because its on when we're all well distracted with paddys day and comic relief. I was so distracted that I forgot to take my lepracorn hat thingy out with me, never fit me anyway.

I presume an entry for Ireland?

I think the song is suited for eurovision, and could do the trick.

Re: do I think eurovision is a joke? Yes I do, but that's what it is meant to be. Once it was a serious competition, but now it's just a laugh that happens every spring with no other intention, but to amuse the public and further highlight the "buddy" relationship some countries have with one another.

I caught the results show on Saturday, and it was hilarious, bring back Fleetwood and Fox.

Wogan - "the act that will represent the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland will beeeeeeeeeeeeeeee............. Cyndi"

Cotton (simultaneously but not as loud as Wogan) - ".........Scooch"................Cyndi cheers and Scooch console themselves......... "No, it's Scooch, it's Scooch going through"........... the look on Cyndi's face was priceless.

Well done Wogan.

The point is that that - Scooch I mean - is what (brace for sweeping generalisation) this country thinks of Eurovision. I mean, we don't take it seriously as a musical contest, do we? Its just a giggle. The astonishing thing is that most of the other countries who take part actually DO take it seriously, its a massive massive thing, even somewhere like Finland where - based on last year - you might think their attitude to it was similar to ours. It isn't, all these others really care about winning it!

Do you think Israel are taking it seriously?

They've entered a song all about the nuclear destruction of their country, it's called "push the button".

I watch it simply for the commentary by Wogan. The man is a genius.

My favourite line was from a few years ago when one act was dressed as female stone age folks with big clubs, leather and so on.

Wogan: "Ah hah, its the Xena tribute act!"

Or when the presenters came on stage..

Wogan: "Everyone calm down, they're here - you're presenters for the night - Ant and Screech!"

Wonderful.
