Not sure about BMW (die BMW drivers) and Audi sharing Footsman, but you're right it goes on alot more than you think.

I may be wrong about that part, but I am fairly sure that there are three cars that use the Golfs parts. And the mondeo vs Jag aspect is correct as well.

The common misconception is that people use the word chassis, when it should really be platform (which is basically a stretched chassis). The current Golf platform is used by the Audi A3, the Audi TT, the VW Bora, VW Beetle, SEAT Leon, SEAT Toledo and Skoda Octavia.

Nice car hat Footsman, is it yours?

I think the point that ad tries to illustrate is that the car is 'well crafted'/well built or something just like the cake version of it was.

Not that one no - I had to get rid of all my photos of my cars hat because the voices were getting too loud.

It always amazes me how so many people opt for the Chrismoyles forum as their first search engine, and google as just a back up.

I think my aunt trumps that. She has burnt her clutch out, not sure if it's after 1,000 miles or not, but she can't do roundabouts with traffic lights on them... we've got one of these near where I am currently residing, on the A5 and every time she has to go round it, she has to turn off every junction, then turn round and get back on it until she gets to the correct junction she wants to get off at.

My mum tried to talk her through it once, the conversation went roughly:

"Right, get in the right-hand lane and carry on."
(Seeing the light has turned red and a lorry is coming out) "Stop.... stop.... STOP!" She nearly wiped out an entire generation of a family.

She also pulls out of junctions when she hasn't got time to do so and cars honk furiously, but by the time they see that she is in fits of laughter, they generally start laughing too. She shouldn't be on the road.

The scary thing is, she learnt to drive in London, but it was then a couple of years before she got a car and could drive again - not that that should make much of a difference.

I think Nissan and Renault are one and the same now, or one has definitely got quite a large amount of shares in the other anyway.

See, that could be funny - but its actually pretty scary.

Its the one thing that worries me about driving more than anything else. I could be the best driver in the world, but if someone else doesn't know how to go round a roundabout or pull out of a junction, I could easily still be dead.

Does she own an Audi?

It's the shares option that's right, Nissan bought into Renault to help in the European market, and Renault into Nissan to break into the Asian market. Jaguar and Land Rover are the same company though.

I know it's scary - know, she owns a Skoda, oddly enough. Fabia I think, old shape.

We talked about 'the roundabout incident' over dinner the other day, her response was 'well it's a roundabout with traffic lights on it, I wasn't expecting traffic lights ON the roundabout.'

Obvioulsy no offense meant to anyone Topher, but she seems either ignorant or irresponsible of what is required from a basic driver.

Under-confident drivers are just as dangerous as over-confident ones. Some may say more so as they are unpredictable.

If someone is not comfortable driving then they should make an effort to get more comfortable with it and learn to do it properly. Or they should stop doing it. The advanced drivers course is very good plus it gives you a discount on your insurance.

I could probably do with going on an advanced driving course. I drive too fast, recently i missed a traffic island and went down a ditch. It was dark and i was knackered, but even so...
How long are these courses?

I agree with you - I don't make any excuses for her, as much as she's my aunt, she shouldn't be on the road. I totally agree about under-confident drivers and the point you made earlier about no matter how good you are, there's no accounting for anyone else. That's why the safest way to drive is to assume everyone else drives like a pr*ck.

I think it depends on which course you go on.

I had something like six lessons over six weeks then a mock test, then another one or two lessons, then the real test.

They're as long as it takes for your instructor to feel you are ready to take the test basically (I think). Be warned though, if you go even slightly over the speed limit (like 31 in a 30 area) you'll fail instantly.

My grandad (on the same side of the family as my aunt, funnily enough) is (or was) one of these instructors in Northampton. So at least bad driving doesn't run in the family.

I think you'd need nerves of steel to be a driving instructor, even with one of those dual pedal cars.
Fair play to anyone who achieves that. It certainly wouldn't be the vocation of anyone in my family.

My grandad is extremely laid back and doesn't get flustered, so he's probably ideal. He only does the advanced ones though, so they have at least passed their test (not that that means an awful lot.)

I was an awful learner driver. I'm amazed the guy didn't have a breakdown.
