Depends what you put in it. The simplest way to go is cold water fish, things like goldfish and shubunkins and fantails, I used to have those when the older kids were little, they were all named after Sonic the Hedgehog characters. If you have a heater in you can have the tropical stuff, like the guppies, mollies, tetras and stuff - but they tend to be a bit more tricky to keep healthy, and you have to be a bit careful which species you mix as some of them can be really aggressive. It only gets really complicated if you want a marine tank for clown fish and stuff like that - I aspire to that one day, but not right now, I wouldn't have the time to look after it. As long as you have an air pump and a filter system, most cold and tropical freshwater tanks are largely self-sustaining.
Guppies are very pretty, and can cope with a fair degree of neglect - you should be safe with them. And they are far more entertaining than television.
