ps3 isn't worth it. one of my boyfriend's co-workers (another grad student working on the same projects) just got a ps3 because he's working on the processor. he got one of the linux modded ones, but it won't work with any of the monitors they have because of some stupid DRM bullshiiiiiiite. yeah. i want to play it. we'll probably get one in a few years.

Wasn't Betamax the choice of sony as well?

Also if the whole porn industry urban legend is anything to go by (they chose VHS over Betamax) they have chosen HD Dvd over Blu-ray. I wouldn't have thought that would make much difference in these days of the internet but you never know

I think Blu-Ray will eventually take off, and i stress eventually, I just don't think the majority of the population, here and in america, just aren't ready for it I don't think. HD DVD is fine for now, I think it was a completely useless addition to the PS3.

Also, the prices for the games on the PS3, they're stupidly expencive, as are the 360 games i guess, but each one at the minute is £50! Its just a big joke.

For some reason Elebits is going to be called Eledees here, can't see why, I much prefer the name Elebits, but its a good game then?

I finally got my Wii online, i don't know how, it just happened, for ages it just wouldn't work, then one day it just did. I'm not moaning, anyway, here is my wii number...

Betamax was supposed to be a better alternative to VHS as well wasn't it?

I think personally Blu-Ray will win in the end.

Betamax had a higher video (and audio) quality than VHS (at least, that's what I've heard as I'm too young to remember).

I've been thinking this from the time the XBox and PS3 specs were released. With a huge number of BR players out there, in the form of PS3's, and the higher capacity over HD-DVD, Blue-Ray has one hell of an advantage.

Yeah I can see that. It can be used for light workouts. I keep reading articles about people who played it 30mins a day and lost weight.

Technically Betamax was better than VHS, but VHS still won. I think HD has already got a good name for itself, and the fact that HDDVD is named after High-Def and the already well established DVD means that it has a name people will recorgnise. I think DVDs will be around for a long time yet though, until it becomes clear what format the winner will be.

I certainly won't buy one or the other, I'll be waiting to see for a little while yet. I disagree though Sidders, I think for the reasons Console mentioned Blu-Ray will win through - it's a high profile battle, anyway, so people do know what Blu-Ray is about.

Personally I think it's far too soon for any new format to truly dominate - we've only just properly switched to DVDs, so people wont want to give up that just yet. I think both formats will either fade away without ever breaking the market like it intended to- like the minidisc - or become really big in about 10 years time. Not just yet though

Was thinking just yesterday how valid it is to keep my mini-disc player in my stack of equipment.

Any modern uses you can think of David?
