I just heard Ian Van Dahl complaining about this on newsbeat. Why do music artists care about it? Don't they make enough money as it is?

Yeah, but my point is they probably get £millions each year, so why should they care that they're missing out on just a small portion of it?

Because that small portion will gradualy become a medium portion which will gradualy become a large portion which will gradualy become the majority portion.

But at the end of the day they make so much money that surely there should be more important things to care about.

But if peolpe are downloading and not buying then the artisits aren't making as much money as they could be...

..Not going to stop me downloading stuff though.

good liddle topic there sidla.

lets put a few things under the mircoscope.

their time
their effort
their sweat
their money

sidla - put yourself in for example IVD shoes. Now she's a women right. (i've only just recently found this one out btw) of course people are gonna moan. they have put the time and effort expecting people to run off down to HMW or whatever Our Price is now called "Insanity?" and buy their material. its all about money.... not words... they just want to keep their overweight and greedy w-ank managers happy by having their bank balance go up a little more.

not heard robbie william moaning recently. talk about laughing to the bank... fat popstar from take that to fat earner called robbie william

etc etc

Well ok,
I thought you lot would back me up but it seems I was wrong.
I know if I was making siht loads of dosh selling records, I wouldn't care about a few people downloading my songs, in fact I think I would be pleased that my material is reaching a wider audience.

Put it this way, after all the effort me and my band put into our first album. One year of raising enough money for equipment then the recording sessions, plus time for writing and rehearsing songs, hundreds of pounds for the recording session plus all the time spent in the studio then the money for duplication, copyright etc, I'd be pretty peed off if I tried to sell a CD to someone and they turned round and said "It's okay, I've downloaded it off the internet."

Not only is it a right smack in the face for all your effort, but it also means that you aren't gonna get the money out of it that you should do.

Ok, i see you're point in a way, but then you don't make millions a year like big artists do. In fact it is fairly ironic that some artists who encourage people to download music, like the Dave Matthews Band for example, are fairly low key. It only seems to be the people who make loads of dosh who complain about it.
At the end of the day, if a band keeps putting out quality singles then I would go and buy the album, but if they released a 1 off good song then I would download it, because £3.99 for 1 song is a rip off.

i'm backing you up alright. i'm not a fan of downloading music. what the hell are record shops doing on high streets. just takes the fun out of music. going to the shop, browsing and then gettting the switch card out.... there is no fun in downloading music. either lazy or not loyal to the person's material.

i have more singles then albums.... i have some classics "Cornershop" (ahhh), The cute little yellow fellow from the Levi's advert etc etc

well if they make an album worth buying then i buy the album but the majority of artists are lazy and stick on 3 good songs which are then released as singles and then fill the rest of the cd with rubbish.

Well, let's put it THIS way.

If they didn't charge such f*cking obscene prices for a CD that you can make yourself for a cost of about 50p, then maybe people wouldn't bother downloading their music.

Also what a lot of artists don't seem to cotton on to is the fact they can use the Internet to their advantage. Think about it. Wider audiences, people can have access to their music who normally wouldn't do, in various countries & so on, people that will hear it, think "I like that," and GO OUT AND BUY THE CD.

FFS.

ad, are you trying to usurp matt as the shark of this board?

i agree that cds cost WAY too much money, but i wouldn't blame the artists. they need to get paid well enough for their work so that they can survive. blame the record companies. most of them are horrible corperations who don't give a monkey's arse if the music is good or not, as long as it sells... i hate them!

It takes me about an hour to download an entire album of mp3 320kbs quality. It takes longer than that to get to the shops and come back, so there is my reason, time saving, honest 8)

Really, downloading music could have a future negative impact on the industry. Then some of my favourit bands wouldnt be able to be heard, specificaly by me. I cant let this happen, must cut cable lines....

NOT

I heard that report as well, most of it was a crock of foul-smelling stuff. This new service is a start, but it's not something I'd use. For one, paying a pound to download one track that is itself copy-protected is not a good deal. Having to pay to listen to a stream of a song you've never heard before and later find out is crap is also not a good deal.

A service which offered free streaming and 30-40p downloads of copy unprotected songs would be one I would use frequently, provided that at least 90% of that 30-40p went directly to the artist. - jc
