Of late I have been spending a bit of time and money buying and watching films from long ago that I should either have seen when I was 12 or have seen but never actually owned. For example, as discussed elsewhere on here, I had never seen Alien or Aliens - watched them last week for the first time.

Other recent purchases include Father Ted - the full series (to be honest, I can't understand why I didn't already own this piece of genius!) and everyones favourite film of all time The Shawshank Redemption (three disk special edition for £7 - not bad).

I've already spoken to a couple of you about the Glasgow comedy Still Game which is possibly the funniest thing I have ever seen, but it may not be as funny to non-glasgow folks. (Its on Thursdays BBC2 10pm for those interested)

Basically, what DVDs do you count as "classics"? It doesn't just have to be films - I tend to find that I will watch a film once or maybe twice but i'll sit and watch Blackadder over and over again.

Ok, If I lost my entire DVD collection in a flash flood (sic), these are the ones I'd replace immediately-

The Simpsons Series box sets (1-9)
The complete Futurama Box set
Eddie Izzard - Unrepeatable / Definite Article
Porco Rosso (One of my favourite films of all time)
Black Books
Spaced
Red Dwarf
Shaun of the Dead (Mine is signed, so I'd be gutted if I lost that)
Spinal Tap

That'll do for the moment

Hmm.. VDs I would count as classics:

  • Films
    • Shawshank Redemption
    • Usual Suspects
    • The Green Mile
    • One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
  • TV
    • Blackadder
    • Flowery Twats
    • Only Fools and Horses

This is difficult.. there are plenty I like, or even love, but wouldn't count as classics. I always forget things as well, so I'll probably add to it when I get home and go through my collection.

I still cannot figure out why I like that film so much. On paper it's a fairly ordinary film, but some combination of the story, acting, directing and whatever make it an amazing film.

I completely agree with each of the above, and the only things I would really add would be Firefly (and the film Serenity), as it's just one of my favourite TV shows of all time. I would probably also add Hot Fuzz to the list to complete the Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg series of DVD's (and because it's a great film with some terrific commentary).

I totally forgot Firefly and Serenity! I can watch Firefly over and over again and never get bored of it.

Only reason I didn't include Hot Fuzz is cause I'm waiting for it go down in price before I buy my copy.
Fantastic film though.

Hmm, I don't think I could be bothered with Porco Rosso... Animi films for a start irritate me plus its in Japanese which I aint too fluent in (Manderin yea, but thats a different thing all together).

Yea - I can imagine that. http://www.find-dvd.co.uk is a cracking site which will show you the cheapest prices. Box sets are the priciest unfortunatly.

Flowery Twats was a recent purchase as well after I sold my dads VHS collection on eBay (don't tell him, he aint noticed yet.)

We can call "classics" just "a good watch" if it makes it easier for you, topher.

I wasn't as impressed with Hot Fuzz as I was with Shaun of the Dead - it may have been because Shaun was so good, I was to expectant. Its prob something I will buy at some point once its come down in price.

If we are listing classics then Airplane and The Naked Gun (the three of them) should be amoung them.

I wouldn't replace any films if I lost them, I'm more of a TV fan. The ones I would immediately replace would be aforementioned Simpsons 1-9, Complete Futurama as well as my complete Arrested Development and Alan Partridge. There are plenty more which I like but wouldn't be desperate to spend my money on twice straight away

When I first watched it, I was told you need to watch it all the way through, no interruptions and I knew why afterwards, it's an utterly engrossing film and I agree those combination of things make it brilliant. The casting was fantastic.

I also agree with Hot Fuzz, but I haven't got it yet and Shawn of the Dead. I think it's only when you know someone who works for the Police that you actually realise how true to life it is with the bureaucratic changes they have made (Police Service instead of Police Force, etc.)

Agree with all of these (never seen Porco Rosso so deleted it)
CSI (the vegas ones, early seasons, but it just gets better)
Ren and Stimpy (new collections out on DVD)
Quantum Leap (3 seasons so far)

Ahh Family Guy is a good call - although i cant be doing with watching loads of them back to back - it gets a bit tedious I find.

Id like to be able to say I own the complete Simpsons on DVD but at about £150 to buy them all, I can't justify it. Plus I have Sky 1 which might as well be called The Simpsons Channel.

what's the missus say about that?

i've been contemplating buying alan partridge on dvd, but you can't get series 2 for region 1. arrested development on dvd is nearly perfect- it's easier to get all the weird meta jokes when you watch a whole season in a day.

I'm obsessed with collecing DVDs and have a huge collection I'd have to replace all of them so I really ought to catalogue them I guess.

Some of my faves are
Friends (1-10)
Lethal Weapon (all)
Die Hard (all)
Legally Blonde (1&2)
24 (all 5 series)
Notting Hill
Pretty Woman
What Women Want
Grease
Rocky Horror
Under seige (both)
Beverley Hills Cop (all)
Star wars (all)
Three Men and a Baby/Little Lady

Oh I could go on and on and I haven't even started on kids movies!

Open All Hours and possibly Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em I would agree with; the rest are funny but not brilliant.
