I think tattoos and piercings are basically a form of decoration, and the habit of body decoration in many different cultures can be traced back thousands of years. For some people though it is definitely more than that, they will have tattoos or piercings for a whole variety of reasons. I know someone who says that her multiple piercings, which she knows are ugly and make her look mutilated, are the better alternative to self-harming. I'm not sure they are any different really. But it all comes down to the same thing - its a form of self-expression, whether you are expressing your creativity, your sense of decoration, your love of colour or form, your happiness, your sadness or your pain and self loathing. There are other ways to express those things, but it would be pretty dull if we all responded the same way to stuff.

Mrs Topher can't have piercings, they make her skin go funny, even gold or silver earrings / belly button rings / whatever.

I agree with Gaspode, I've got no problem with people doing things that are of no harm to anyone, but this kind of thing is just a bit wrong:

I can't wear any metal at all - makes my skin go funny too. Can't even wear my wedding ring anymore. I miss wearing earrings. :(

i can only really get away with surgical steel, which is fine because it's all i want.

also, people with forked tongues always strike me as people who's tongue studs were rejected. mr kendra k pierced his septum with a safety pin. it was always gross looking until he got a titanium retainer for it. before he'd use paper clips. (that's punk.)

I thought that was a common way to get a forked tongue anyways?
Could easily be wrong on that though, not really an area I know much about.

it's the way to do it, but what i meant was that they try to act like they did it on purpose, which usually isn't the case.

Tattoos are ok in moderation, I don't like them on the face or neck, it scares me, and on women the small of the back one is nice, as for the Robbie Williams / David Beckham Tattoos, and Amy Winehouse, they look awful, and make what could be nice looking people look ugly.

I like Amy Winehouse's. They're very distinctive. I like her look in general. She isn't afraid to be different and challenge people's perceptions of the conventionally attractive, and I admire that in anyone.

it's odd, but i find something compelling about winehouse, and it's not her drug and alcohol addiction. she's definitely got style that isn't so cookie cutter, and her music's not bad either.

i'm addicted to bad tattoo communities.

Me too. I heard someone say on the radio recently that she seems to be "surrounded by chaos" and I thought that was very appropriate. I did a toned-down version of the beehive for a party I went to last weekend. people seemed to like it.

I saw a bloke who was doing that the other day. I called him a tramp.

well it is personal taste for granted, but do you think that say Beckham in the Buff would be more or less attractive with or without all the body art.

Tattoos arn't really the realm of unemployed accountants so nest I lie low on this I think

My hubby has tattoos. Me, I would change my mind and want something else after a while. But, I would love to get a henna tattoo!

I'm not a Beckham fan. but I'd say he's more attractive with the tats. I find well-done, well-placed body art sexy on both men and women.

I do like henna art, traditional designs. I like their impermanence as much as their beauty.

There used to be a girl at college and if you sat next to her and didn't pay attention she would have drawn loads of stuff on your hands.
