The replacement for the DVD format is already here in the form of HD-DVD and Bluray, although it will be a while until the market grabs a hold of it fully, and even then it's doubtful that the DVD format will just die.

Hasn't there been some kind of argument about the copyright for Bluray? Or am I imagining things again....?

I don't remember anything, but there has been lots of talk recently of one of the levels of encryption being cracked on the Bluray disc. HD-DVD was cracked a while ago, and Bluray is about 2/3's done now.

Blu Ray / HD DVD aren't replacing DVD, they're just improvements on the current technology - like the leap from 78s to 45s.

I firmly believe that the way forward is video on demand anyway. When everyone's got good enough broadband connections, we'll just connect to Blockbuster online (or whatever) and download the film you want onto a local hard drive and watch it from there.

I agree with that; digital delivery is cheaper and more convenient (and possibly quicker too). The one problem with it at the moment is the insistence of using DRM, which is a pain for pretty much anyone of a FOSS OS.

FOSS = Free Open Source Software.
OS = Operating System.

I think the operating system will be irrelevant, I can see set top boxes being available - much like freeview/ sky + boxes that are available now and you'll be able to store your downloaded films on then. There will be no getting away from DRM, the media companies won't license anything to be downloaded that can be easily copied.

Back in May I despatched to Zenon details on the death of the Cassette, thinking it would probably be of interest to him.

Casette tapes should be dead now. I understand the demand for records and vinyl, but tapes? It's just an antiquated system.

Magnetic tapes are still used for backups around the world. Treated correctly they're very durable and have far faster read/write times than hard-drives or any optical-based medium; it's also very cheap which makes it perfect for inexpensive and numerous backups.

I have an image of a geek, standing by a pile of tapes shouting obscenities at anyone who walks past.

Music should never have been sold on tapes, the quality was always awful. That said, people still want to listen to music on Vinyl, so they can't care about the sound that much.
