Saw this on another site:

Britons are now sending more than one billion text messages per week according to the latest figures from the Mobile Data Association (MDA).

The figure is 25% higher than a year ago and is set to shatter forecasts for how many text messages have been sent to and from handsets this year.

So which do you prefer? Texting or phoning?

Personally, i've never been a huge fan of text messages - i've always found a phonecall quicker and more straight to the point. Texts have their place though.

I read that yesterday. Personally I text more than I phone because I get loads of free texts (though I'd like to think I'm not a tight bastard) and it makes my credit last. If I phoned everyone, my phone bill would be sky high. I tend to think if I'm ringing old farts, then I should ring because, bless them, they probably won't know how to read their texts. I just hope they know how to answer the phone.

My mum has started texting. She is doing that thing of thinking its cool (FAO Cat: read 'kewl') to text in txt spk, but she is really bad at it.

My Dad is getting into the whole texting thing, he uses predictive text oly you can tell when it doesn't recognise a word when he types it himself its in capitals. He also can't spell my Girlfriends name. Apparently her name is SHANTEL...

I prefer to text, as often the point of a Male call is to give or receive information ( Drink ?) ( Love You) (Home soon) ( have you got any knickers on) and if you text the recipient can answer at there own pace, when it suits them, and you don't feel you are interrupting their day.

Any people you speak to mostly are mostly C**ts ! ( mostly !)

There's an old-ish guy at table tennis who uses predictive text as well, that always makes me laugh because when it doesn't recognise a word, he just puts a space between each letter.

My dad texts using predictive text but doesn't normally bother changing the word if the one he wants isn't the first one to come up, so his texts are largely illegible and you get "Can you do something for of", or something similar (except it's normally worse than that.)

You can turn them off I Just ignore most people anyway, they are either after money or after sexual favours.

I know, but my mum would struggle to find the power button. In addition to that, it would never be on and I am always saying to people "if your mobile is always off or you never answer it, what's the point in having it?" I think she has the right idea if she doesn't want people to get hold of her.

my mum has just got the hang of texting.. my dad on the other hand hardly knows how to turn his phone on. he can makes calls. but thats it.

i prefer to text anyway.. i hate the sound of my own voice, even more so know my friend pointed out i have a distictive accent :I

well i'm from coventry. i don't know how distictive its supposed to be but my friends have started picking faults with the way i speak. one of them told her daughter to stop speaking like me. i was well offended! i'm not even sure whats so different about it either...

I got my mum into texting, but she text me so often that it would be better if she just picked up the phone and rang me. To answer your question foots, i think texting is better, the people who phone me only phone to complain about there lives and i don't want to listen to that all day, where as if they text i dont have to listen to there whinny voices. That may sound awfull, but you hav'nt met my "friends".

I love to text. I think I prefer it to phoning because I can have a conversation while I do about 4 other things. I probably send at least 50 a day

Texting, as previously stated, certainly makes it easy to know when someone is due home, needs to be picked up, etc. It's also a nice little way to say 'hi' or 'i love you' or whatever. It's the modern equivalent of slipping a note in someone's pocket. It can be very sweet.
Conversely, you can use it to dodge phone calls you don't feel like making. You know, when someone calls you from their MOBILE and you don't answer the call, let it go straight to voicemail and then you quickly return their call to their HOME number in the hopes they were out & about when they phoned? With texting you can just text them back and say, "So sorry. Am really tied up. Big meeting. Take care" and be done with it.

I'm astonished at how quickly (relatively speaking) I and most parents I know have gone from being persuaded by our kids (of a certain age anyway) to LET them have mobiles, to relying on them when said kids are out and about, to the point of insisting that they take them with them and if they are going to be staying at a friend's taking their charger with them too! If my daughter decided she didn't want to have a mobile any more I would make her! It's ridiculous really, how fast such things change from being a luxury to a perceived necessity.
