That's actually an interesting point, they don't really teach you how to spell words. When I was in primary school we were given spelling lessons, but all that consisted of was memorising words, they said stuff like 'sound it out', but this is the English language, the sound is usually very misleading, especially with slang and the many words that are mispronounced now-a-days. They didn't really teach us the many rules for figuring out whether there was a double letter in a word, or how a vowel can change the sound of another vowel...education is unfortunately lacking is many basic areas.

That's still a year older than my two! They are given the rules at their school which is a comfort

What's a "hexcode" out of interest?

A hexcode (in this instance) is a hexadecimal (0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E,F) number which represents a colour. The web standard allows the use of a 24-bit colour scale, and as that would mean 16,777,216 different colours it'd be a bit difficult to give them all names, so they are instead represented by numbers, and to make it easier for webdevelopers to either remember or figure out the numbers representing the colours, the code is split into three 8-bit segments for Red, Green and Blue, which consists of two hexadecimal characters each. When put together, these three hexadecimal bytes make up the hexcode.

Yes, they put more emphasis on grammer and reading in particular i've noticed. In my daughter's school they support them far more than they ever did in my time and no-one seems to be left behind. There is a problem that they feel under pressure to do that because of the league tables and that means that less able children seem to be excluded from schools for practically no reason.
Despite all this though, we should soon see spelling and grammer standards improve across the board i would have thought.
