After a conversation Foot-loose and I were having the other day, we thought it may make a reasonable thread. Mine:

• The woman who lives opposite my mum used to live on the same street as Roald Dahl, used to be friends with his kids and used to go round and play in his swimming pool.*
• My mum used to deliver to Stewart F1 when they were called that and based in Milton Keynes, saw Jackie Stewart (not to speak to) reasonably regularly and got me a signed photo once.*
• My mum was at a Queen gig once and was on one of those port-a-loo things with no roof and Freddie Mercury flew over very low in his helicopter.*
• My Grandad used to teach that guy who played the dad in Mary Poppins' son.
• I used to work with Christopher Lee's daughter.

That's about all I can think of now.

*I don't consider some of these people two-bob celebrities, but I put them anyway.

Er...I meet loads of D-list celebs thru work so I tend to forget about these tenuous links. But let's see...

My best friend from college Janet's uncle was in the Muppets! He was in the BBC band which the Muppet band were modelled on in the 70s.

My friend Lindsay is a second cousin of one of The Cult. i forget whether it's astbury or Duffy.

My old uni tutor was the great-great-grandson (I think) of Boris Karloff.

My friend Ben's grandmother almost rented a house from LS Lowry, who used to work as a rent collector in Salford in the 50s/60s. She told him he was a rip-off merchant.

One of my great-uncles jumped ship whilst in the Navy in the 30s and went to America, where he became a film actor. We have an original photo of him on the set of a Western with a letter from him describing his work, but we can't figure out whether he was anything approaching famous or just a bit-parter.

It's very impressive to have gone back that far in your family history. I think I would only get to about the 1700s or 1800s.

I don't get the "twice/three times removed" thing with cousins.

The 'removed' thing is just the numerical difference between the number of generations both people would have to go to find the common ancestor.

I find the whole looking back over your family history extremely tedious. And people who wish to be connected to royalty or celebs are totally "up them selves" for lack of a better phrase. Sorry.

Viv, this whole thread is a piss-take of people who seek to be associated with celebrities. Have you read some of mine?!

I think looking up my family history would be interesting, but I wouldn't really get the time to do it in the depth that I would like to. I like history in general anyway.
