A colleague of mine has written a book which was a type of research based book, regarding a brief period in Agatha Christie's life. It's on Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Agatha-Christie-E ... 0720611121I've read his latest novel, which is soon to be published, and although it wasn't really my cup of tea, I could appreciate how well written it was, and my girlfriend couldn't put it down, reading it in one sitting. When he writes he puts in lots of dialogue and lots of detail, and then embarks on massive editing sessions taking out chunks where it is overloaded. This is almost as time consuming as the writing stages itself, and he has to force himself to stop tweaking and editing or it'd never be finished! I guess in the end it's finding a writing style/technique that feels natural and works well. Very subjective.
