Are you actually wishing to be published? If so, that's great.

I'd love to write a book too, but a comedy of some kind. Why don't you take part in my recent "short story thread": the one I think I called "Calling All Short Story Writers". :-) It's about the BBC who are currently looking for people to write short stories.

My boss has had a book published. It's odd, he's a 60 year old god fearing balding man, yet the book could rival anything D. H Lawrence could write when it comes to saucy-ness...

Its under the name 'Harriott Crook' and its called 'Playing with Fire'. (I did the cover artwork...) You can get it from amazon actually.

writing books is rough. my friend is currently working on his second novel and it's been slow and painful going. his first book wasn't as bad. i keep joking about writing my magnum opus - pee on foucault, but i'm too busy working.

I'm writing my first book, and it is damn hard. I'm finding writing speech to be the hardest part - it's not like talking at all, in talking we waffle a lot, and you can't have that in books. Still, there is a certain amount of fun in the process.

Dialogue is a nightmare to write. People who do it well are very clever indeed.

Love the pic, Zoots! What's your signature of, by the way?

I should of guessed you wouldn't of know who Marvin the Martian was...

In life, he is a cartoon character created by Warner Brothers.

My strategy so far is basically to ignore any dialogue, writing a brief description of what is said, and moving on. I plan to write the dialogue at a much later date.

Not a bad plan. There are techniques you can study to help, kind of like "dialogue for dummies" things which people tell me are useful.

Well, I've been reading up on techniques, and, or course, readings books to see hows other do it, but it's still difficult. I've been practising by writing short-stories based mostly around dialogue, and I am getting better, but I think I'm going to have to limit the amount of actual dialogue in my book or I'll never get it done right.

You too have to go in for that recent "Short Story Competition Thread" I wrote.

A colleague of mine has written a book which was a type of research based book, regarding a brief period in Agatha Christie's life. It's on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Agatha-Christie-E ... 0720611121

I've read his latest novel, which is soon to be published, and although it wasn't really my cup of tea, I could appreciate how well written it was, and my girlfriend couldn't put it down, reading it in one sitting. When he writes he puts in lots of dialogue and lots of detail, and then embarks on massive editing sessions taking out chunks where it is overloaded. This is almost as time consuming as the writing stages itself, and he has to force himself to stop tweaking and editing or it'd never be finished! I guess in the end it's finding a writing style/technique that feels natural and works well. Very subjective.
