Disappointment? Shock? The BBC operates under exactly the same restrictions as my organisation does during the run up to elections - there is even a name for it, it's called "purdah". He would have known the rules as well as any other BBC (or any public body) employee and been sent numerous emails and memos over the preceding weeks to make sure of that. Why on earth would he think that the rules somehow suddenly don't apply to him? He knew exactly what he was doing in making the comments he made - I just wonder what his agenda was in making them, knowing that the only outcome would be that he would lose his job?
