The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Just thought I'd add to this, seemingly constantly ongoing, discussion over the treatment of "newbies".

I'm technically a "newbie" as this is my first post, but I have been reading threads on this site for years. That might be a bit excessive, but it wouldn't take long to read over a few threads, see how the banter goes and (hopefully) fit in. You can't change the way forums like this work, if you don't like the things people may say, don't open yourself up to it by posting!

I personally like the fact that spelling and grammar is seen as important, it makes life so much easier and will benefit people in the long run!

Anyway....Hi I'm Abby and I'm "new". Thanks for posting the video, I'm a lazy student and didn't get up in time to watch it in real time.

That should be "seemingly constant, ongoing discussion".

You're welcome.

Nice to meet you lazy Keelite.

And thanks for the recording neil, and also Console who I believe is doing one too - one way or another I will hopefully get to see more than I thought I would, thanks again.

Last time I checked "constantly ongoing" was acceptable, but oh well, nobody is perfect!

Thanks for the warm welcome, even if I did do it in the wrong thread!

Technically he is right though, it's a question of not only punctuation but also of tenses. You cant have two adverbal words next to each other. However "Constatly ongoing" on it's own would indeed be perfectly aceptable.....

Ahhh the hypocrisy of me correcting people's grammar.

Woops! Oh well, you learn something new everyday!

Right, I'll stop filling this thread with my own English lesson and introduction.

Hmm I see your point. It is somewhat of a tautology.

I didn't get the first 1/2 hour as I was scrambling to find something to record Realplayer streams, but I have everything from about 07:00 onwards.

I've only got from the first record onwards, I missed the first 10/15 minutes. Luckily, I already had something to download rtsp streams with.

Can you share it?

The file: -

Cheers Console, Neil's file is good but everything freezes on his when I try and skip a couple of hours in!

Yup - I tried it with Real Player and Real Alternative, both of which didn't work.
AVI files seem to be fine, though!

I posted exactly what was broadcast. Console's is recompressed to AVI.
I prefer to keep the original broadcast as reference rather than distributing a recoded version.
I've recoded mine as well for ease of playback with http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html so you can use that to recode if you like. To keep quality with my own recode, my AVI is bigger than the original, so it's not a good idea to share that one.

Console, can you share (with me) your original RM capture?

If you skip in small increments, you can fast forward through the RM file, but if you skip a huge amount, realplayer or realalternative doesn't like it.

I think the best attitude to come on this forum with is a i listen to the Chris Moyles Show and like sarcasm kinda attitude

otherwise you're done for Viv!

I don't mind a bit of sarcasm, depending on who it is coming from. That's the thing: you get a sense of people, and who you like/dislike. It also depends on mood too (I find anyhow).... I don't mind banter to a point, but I always say there's a fine line between banter/verbal abuse. And it does sometimes take away from learning new things. I'm at my happiest when I discover new things re: radio/music. I've discovered quidco this morning, and now I'm a mega happy bunny.

That's the truth! If what you're trying to watch is at the end, you can only skip in 10 - 15 minute increments or it gets super pissy with you and then it takes forever to re-load. However, that's better than not being able to watch it at all! Many thanks to Console and Neil for uploading this because I was running around like a frantic rabbit at nearly midnight trying all 3 of my PCs before I finally gave up and went to bed, unable to watch it live.

Ahh - I had a feeling there was gonna be a thread where a convo about new folks had started.

Hullo Neil. I posted a thingy in the welcome newbies thread related to this last night. Normally I don't get involved in the "we hate / abuse new people" arguement but it's been bugging me a bit of late so i'm sticking my 2 cents in. Personally, one of the reasons that I don't get involved is because i've decided that the show likes promoting the idea that they have a fan site that is full of morons and complete arseholes. That's fair enough, if that's what they want to do.

neilt0 wrote:I just don't understand it when Chris suggests people aren't welcoming on this forum...

As I said above, I think they like the idea that we are a bunch of weirdo internet geeks that act like hardmen on here but in real life would never have the chance of getting a girlfriend.

I don't actually think that's the case though - the majority of folk on here are pretty decent and accommodating and will talk to you whither you spell things right or not. If you have had a run in with one or two members, frankly - thats the way the world works, yer never gonna get on with everyone. That doesn't mean you should tar us all with the same brush.

Yudster wrote:This is how real people talk to each other!

No. Real people pick up the phone or have a conversation face to face. The people on here are all fictitious.

neilt0 wrote:What I find most ridiculous is that feel you have to pick up on a newbie's spelling or grammar or sentence structure but fail to look at the idea of either talking about the thread topic

I've said elsewhere that the spelling isn't overly important if it's a mistake. It is more when ppl tlk lke ths an no1 noez wotz goin on. THAT does me tits in. Correct spelling is important though, although constantly correcting people can get tedious to read.

neilt0 wrote:Give that a few goes and maybe n00bs will stay around.
But maybe don't actually want that, you'd rather keep the forum closed off to newbies?

To play the devils advocate for a moment here, why should someone who has spent time here since 2002 change his habits to accommodate someone else?

neilt0 wrote:It seems like every post that talks about the show eventually gets diverted in to some personal or irrelevant topic or is filled with your own in-jokes. Fine in the off-topic forum, but can you leave it there?

I've been on sites that are stricter about how on topic the thread stays and they aint as much fun (in my opinion). Threads go off and back on topic on here all the time - this one included, if someone wants to discuss the topic title, no-one is gonna complain so they can just bring it back on subject again.

neilt0 wrote:Here's how the forum looks to new people:

n00b: "Hey, I've just joined and I wonder if anyone's noticed interesting fact about X"
regular1: "You twat. We covered this topic in discussion 1,423 page 3"
regular2: "whiff whaff. banana. whumpflip"
regular3: "n00b should be killed"
.
.
n00b: "Blimey."
regular4: "Why are people so SENSITIVE? LIGHTEN UP! whiffle banana wibble fleeb, Oh I'm so clever"

First of all, I would quite like to see a couple of examples of this. I feel like this is maybe everyone being tarred with a brush again.

Secondly, sorry, but if you join up to a site and ask the same question that has been asked repeatedly, they you deserve to be slagged for it. I refer you to HERE for a better idea of why it gets irritating. It's a bit like walking in to Clintons Cards a week before Christmas and asking if they sell Christmas cards. Of course they do, and if you opened your eyes and had a look, you would find them - no bother.

neilt0 wrote:If you keep having to ask over and over "Why are you n00bs being sensitive?" maybe you could realise it's not actually the n00b's problem.

We have plenty of new folk who have joined recently and seem to be getting on fine. And again, in my opinion, it is the new persons problem to an extent. Why should the existing members change just to accommodate a few new people? People should know what to expect when they join... you wouldn't walk into Clintons Cards a week before Christmas and shout at them for not selling halloween masks!

*takes a deep breath*

All that said - welcome along. You seem to be able to make your point pretty clearly so stick with it and im sure you will fit in just dandy.

neilt0 wrote:I've uploaded all I have of today's live video at http://www.megaupload.com/?d=G6BOEJFD

It's 470MB.

06:30 to 07:00ish is missing, but the rest of the 3 hours is all there.

Cheers for doing this. I thought they had been showing the thing live all week, seemingly not. Never saw it on Friday so this will give me a chance to have a look.
