I mean if people are going to be apathetic enough not to vote AT ALL and then bitch and whine about why they don't like whoever wins, they have no right to get on at them because they made no attempt to change it.

I know exactly what you are saying and I completly agree with the above - if people don't vote, they have no right to complain about anything.

However, thats not what you said. You said "If you want him to stay, you can't moan when he posts, that doesn't make sense" which you then compared to "people who don't vote then moan about the government".

My point is that someone can vote for him to not be banned. That doesn't mean they have to agree with everything he says.

S4B wrote:it is a bit Hitleresque now I have read all the arguments.

It is, but Chris is more than entitled to ban whoever he damn well wants - this aint no democracy. If Chris said "this guy annoys the hell outta me... banned!" then I wouldn't have given it a second thought. However, Chris has given us the option... a public vote. Based on the rules and what I see as right and wrong, it's wrong to kick someone out just cos you don't like them. In my books, that's the readers problem, not the person who is writing it.

S4B wrote:Can we just not take away his ability to create new threads so he has to post all his crap in the thread that was created for him?

PHPBB doesn't allowed you to only post in one thread. It would, however, allow you to post in only one forum (i think).

I don't mind him posting in other threads, it's the continual stream of new threads that mainly annoys me about him and Viv! It's worse than spam in my inbox!

If it came down to that, it would take only minutes to write something to block a user posting in all threads except one (or however many, and the inverse).

New threads don't bother me, as long as they're not mindlessly insulting or spelt in txt spk. At least it gives us something to dip into if we choose.
Let people do what they want, I say.

DO IT!!! That would be amazing Console! Please! Then we don't have to be Hitleresque and ban him although after seeing the stupid thread from today about Chris' book I may change my mind and switch back to yes.

I almost mentioned you in the post, I was that sure you would tell me how easy it was to do!

It'd pretty much just be a one-liner: -

Code: Select allif($user->data['user_id'] == 8102 && $topic_id != 19069) trigger_error('USER_CANNOT_THREAD_POST');

Very possibly, I've only ever heard it spoken, and possibly by people that don't know what it is either.

Bonanzoid wrote:Topher, I can see your point about supporting no-one, however as we live with a First-Past-The-Post system, tactical voting remains dominant amongst the undecided, so if you support no-one, I think there's always a good chance there are parties you'd want in even less than others - making tactical voting against them more plausible.

I think not voting is inexcusable really. Whether you're voting for who you want it or who you think has the best chance of stopping those who you hate, there's always a reason to vote.

Yeah, but there are people (I know one of them) who believe all the current (top) political parties are as bad as one another; that they are clones of each other, even. That is the reason the person I know gives for not voting and I think he has as much right as I do to complain. If he weren't voting because he didn't care, your argument would stand.

I think the fact that he's not come in here todefend himself speaks volumes. He's either a zen like master of buddhist restraint or he doesn't are about any other part of the forum other than his posts. He contributes nothing and only takes stuff away. Has he ever replied to anything that someone has written except as a response to his own posts? Not often if he has.

After a while the Dead Thread became funny, then as with so many other things the joke soon wore off. Iain is like one of those kids who, when they think something's funny the first time also think it's funny the 400th time. You laugh at first then realise how annoying it is.

Would I support an Iain only thread. Probably not becasue as I stated above he contributes nothing else to the forum. A forum is a place where things are discussed. He doesn't, he just posts statements most of which are either dull or false. Anybody could do that. What if another newby joined up and only posted their latest XBox gamer score? Would we tollerate it?

If he wants to discuss things then fine. I'll entertain anyone. But if all he wants to do is post crap (not subjective) then he should bugger off. Surely the only reason for informing us that some Jazz musician has died is if he either has a deep interest in Jazz which he should explain and state how it affects him or if the Jazz musician in question is well known enough for people to have heard or give a damn about him. Not just simply stating facts. Otherwise I shall start posting threads about my day to day life, facebook status update stylee.

If he wants a place to make his points in a one sided argument I suggest he get's a blog until such times as he can learn to contribute to the discussions.

I think it was Bill Hicks that said something like "It doesn't matter who you vote for, it's still the government who gets in." It's something I sort of agree with (when I start thinking too deeply about politics).

Indeed. I have voted in terms of what I would do if I had Chris's authority, so the "wrong to kick someone out just because you don't like them" thing is cancelled out (if it was valid in the first place) by "If Chris said "this guy annoys the hell outta me... banned!" ".

I have never agreed so much with Andy B in one go before ever. How strange.

I'm still a firm Yes.

Ok, I have voted no and tied the poll at 16 all.

I have voted no because I can choose not to read his threads, I only dip into about 20% of threads.

He is annoying, but I think to a certain degree we all are, some more so than others obviously.

The fact he does not retaliate and keeps doing it, I have to admire him for.

Personally if I had been given as much abuse as Ian and Viv get on here I would not want to come back.

I think he will learn to stop posting when drunk, some of us really shouldn't be allowed to do this.

I believe Ian is a Chris Harris and Console experiment to liven things up round here, and this is the third part of the experiment, feedback, don't worry one of them will forget who they are posting as soon and threaten suicide or something. Good work Guys, I look forward to your fesses.

I used to think Tom Greeni was an experiment when he first joined, as he was asking loads of questions, and everytime he posted I had this vision of them all in an aftershow meeting saying "Wouldn't it be funny if we signed up as some local radio DJ on the forum and asked loads of dumb questions, just to wind them up, cos they love being mean to newbies don't they!"

As for Iain Smith, his latest thread this morning has pretty much summed things up, if you don't respond to him - he loses. Oh, and in that thread he linked to a FAKE news page. No-one could be as dumb as to believe that, so its either his silly sense of humour, or he really is enjoying his project, he's like our very own Borat, journalist from obscure back of beyond place of wherever.

I'm changing to 'No', because anyone who gets a thread made about them - by the head honcho, has done what they set out to achieve.
