Yes, you have, and having read both this thread and the report I'm slightly confused as to what you are reporting the post for. People are allowed to have different opinions.

No, I'm not taking the piss. There's debates and there's being assinine. It's a fine line.

Yeh, but like I say, there's only a need to express them once, not 100 times. I think we've all got the point.

So for you Viv a discussion is you state a point someone else states a point.......next subject?

No need to report them for repeating their words though , Viv! Jeez! It's a bit harsh. I'm suprised you didn't report me when you thought I'd opened another thread on the same subject that you did!

It wasn't that. My instinct tells me he doesn't like me, and appears to be trying to create issues where there are none.

Yeah. No offense meant (although quite possibly given with you), Viv, but I had many 'debates' with you where I've needed to reiterate a point many, many times before you even acknowledged it as a point. I also only count about five times, not '100'.

Are you now saying that your reported DevilsDuck's post because your instinct says that he doesn't like you?

I don't have a problem with anything you said, I was just saying why some people take offence to the word. I have probably used that phrase hundreds of times without meaning offence - and it's clear that you did too.

Instinct = yes, pretty much. I was relying on undercurrents to tell me what to do next. I never go by factual evidence. :-)

To be honest, I think you're being ridiculous.

However, I don't think there was any need to report any of your posts.

It might be ridiculous but it's certainly true that some people take offence to it.

Yes, but if you go through life worrying about what will cause offence to some people, you'll never get anywhere. As Yudster says, some people are fine with being called 'black' and others aren't. There is no universally accepted way of describing a black person and you can never please all of the people all of the time.

Personally I haven't got a racist bone in my body, but if I am describing someone who is black, I'll usually say either 'the black fella', or 'the coloured woman'. There aren't very many other times I need to use the expression to be honest, because it makes no odds what colour a person's skin is.

Yup, I agree, it's a minefield when it comes to descriptions and not worth worrying too much about what words to use if it's in a grey area such as 'coloured'. On the other hand though, I also think you'll 'never get anywhere' if you just go through life saying exactly what you want. It brings us back to the topic - that's what Alex did, thinking that she was living in the 'real world' by saying her exact thoughts. She couldn't be father from the truth - the 'real world' is full of self-censorship and being aware of where the boundaries lie.

C'mon. Alex had been warned by BB, and chose to go on regardless. This World is out-of-control with PC stuff.

Saying what's on your mind is not necessarily a bad thing in my opinion, at least you then know where you stand. I'm not advocating bullying in any way, that is, of course, unacceptable. I don't know what this Alex fella did or said, so I can't really comment on that.

I just think having a go at someone because they were trying not to be offensive (and succeeding) is a bit petty.

Agreed. I think this is all getting waaaay out of hand.
I think we're living in a world where everyone has become so bloody touchy since recent historical events. I've heard that they're changing some nursery rhymes because it may cause offence to some people... one rhyme being Ba Ba Black Sheep. How pathetic is that?
When I was at school, if some parents didn't like the way things were done or they just didn't agree with something, say morning prayer at the beginning of assembly or R.E lessons, they'd arrange for teachers to simply just remove them from the lesson and send them to do something else... where as now a days; there is * uproar. People are forced/demanded to change things to suit others. At the end of the day, whether you've recently come into the country, changed religion, etc. you generally know "the rules". If you don't like it then don't do join/come in.

So you've got the "being petty" stuff too. This was my first instinct.

Alex basically threatened to have everyone in the house's family "dealt with on the outside World". Considerably more serious than the word "coloured".

I know - that's what I'm saying, she deserved everything she got. However, it proves that in life you can't be 100% honest to everyone all the time because that's not necessarily a nice thing. If you read my posts back you'll see that I have only been stating the facts and mainly agree with you!

So if you were describing their appearance, what word would you use in relation to their skin tone?

Yuds, I think your missing my point completely and at risk of being reported for saying it again

Refering to someone as coloured implies they are different to the norm

My colour is pink, my friend Dave is black......whos the coloured one?

Mr Duck, you really are a type of bird! Call yerself 'EggShell' and be done with it, aye? Its a good argument you make and everything, and I do think calling people by their skin colour is a bit lazy, perhaps the 'fat bloke' or 'the one in the green jumper' etc would be more appropriate. I think the PC Brigade love this sort of thing, the new term of offense now is "Brainstorming" because apparently this would cause offense to........ epileptics. We have to draw the line somewhere and agree to disagree, and then common sense can prevail and shine out through all the grey areas.

Grey = not black n white, but grey, it has nothing to do with people, just instances in life where things are complex.

Just to add a bit of history here folks :)

I studied History at college, and one of the modules was the Civil Rights movement in the US. For most African-Americans, the term 'coloured' is deeply offensive to them because of the connotations it holds. You need to understand that in most of the southern states of the US in the 60's, segregation was in full swing. 'Coloured' was a term used to divide white people from black. Look at old photos from that era, and you'll see signs saying 'Whites Only' and 'Coloureds Only' on shop doors, drinking fountains etc. This is why they don't like the term being used, its a throwback to the days when black people were treated like subhumans in American society.

I don't think the term is offensive over in England, as we never had segregation, however I personally don't use the term, as it holds alot of negative connotations.
