Alright, so I have the unenviable job of compiling a wishlist of replacement radio studio kit for noon Saturday. Been investigating professional CD players (found out the boxy Denon things my local commercial station use cost more than a grand each, holy sh*t) and I remembered the new units in the refurbished R1 studios let DJs simulate a scratching effect, as Chris has so effectively demonstrated in the past.

Any ideas as to what they're currently using? - jc

The best player for that sort of thing is the Numark CDN-90.

the best cd player for that sort of thing is the PIONEER CDJ-1000 but you can actually scratch just like a record there is a demo of it on their webnsite of a dj scratching using this cd play hope this helps!

JC - I presumer that this is for your Hospital/Student Radio station.

Well....as you said those Small Denons are mondo-expensive. This is for a number of reasons. Firstly they are for professional boradcast use so are superb quality. Their compact size also effects the price and the fact they are 'cartridge' CD players (i.e. instead of sticking the CD on a tray, it is in serted in a case).

Denon are really the make to go with as even with the cheaper models the quality of both the machines themselves and the audio is fantastic. They also come with many standard broadcast functions and features.

You are (again, presumably), acting within a limited budget here. If you wanted my honest opinion as to what to get, I would recommend the Denon DN-C630 CD player.

It's features include audio-sync start (e.g. if there is 1 and a half seconds of silence at the start of a track, you press the CUE button and it automatically cues to where the audio starts - i.e. 1 and a half seconds in0. It has variable pitch/speed, programmable, and frame-by-frame cue (if, for example, you want to cue up a track which has a slow, quiet introduction to a loud sound effect before the track starts, you can cue by milliseconds to where you want the track to start). Last one I can think of is mixing desk remote start facility.

Basically what we're doing is a business plan factoring in all the costs for essential new studio equipment for our next broadcast as well as other promotional activities and stuff. We have a set of two KAM professional CD players which are only just starting to become picky with just which CDs it plays, so replacements aren't that necessary at present, but we used to have a third really really old consumer deck which suddenly failed in the middle of last broadcast. (I did see there's a more expensive tray-loading version of that Denon CD player, incidentally.)

The model you suggested (Funky) sounds good for general use, and I think I'll factor one of those in to replace the third dead player in the end. What would be really beneficial would be the scratching effect though, and Matt, your suggestion sounds like the best bet for replacing the Kam unit when that time comes. The Pioneer is nice and portable, but a bit too expensive for only the one unit.

Forgetting the new digital system, the CD players will either be the Denon DN-951FA, but most likely the Denon DN-961FA.

As far as MD players are concerned they'll most likely be the Denon DN-991R.

These are, mind, considering the equipment for the broadcast studios. Equipment in the production studios will differ slightly.

See, I'd have thought that, but nowhere on those two models have I seen a CD "scratching" feature that Chris has used on the show. I'll investigate the webcam pictures in the future to see if I can locate any of these Denons.

I've never heard of a 'scratching' feature as such. What I think it will most likely be is scrath sound effects played over the top and the CD players variable speed being utilised....but I dunno
