I've never heard of Watchmen. Looks pretty cool though.

And I too will be attempting to shoehorn the word "geekgasm" into conversations at work next week.

Watchmen is a graphic novel (aka comic) by Alan Moore and (I think) Dave Gibbons. Pop along to your local bookshop and grab a copy. I would, obviously, recommend that you try Waterstone's but I know Topher or Foots will remind you that other, lesser bookshops are also available.

*points at S4B* You know about comics! You're a geek-ette.

It is an utterly ace graphic novel though, I can't recommend it highly enough.

No Bruvva, I know about graphic novels as I sell them. I have NEVER read it.

Watchmen is ace. Really really ace. Don't hold your breath to a sequel to the movie though...

That's intellectual snobbery that is.

It really is intellectual snobbery I'm afraid. I love graphic novels and comic books, I've been reading them most of my life.

Bro - you ever read/heard of Bone by Jeff Smith?

Anyone who calls a comic a "graphic novel" is the real snob. Honestly.

Blame the publishing industry, that's what they decided to call them.

The TV industry chose to call soap operas "Drama Serials", but only the snobs actually do.

Surely a 'comic' is aimed at a younger reader whilst a 'graphic novel' is longer and deals with more mature subjects for an older audience?
I don't see where the snobbery lies in that - that particular genre is so vast that I think it could do with a few sub-genres rather than just being tarnished with the 'comic' brush. It's the same with music.

Well I admit I was wrong in my definition. My friend (who is crazy about both genres) says that "Graphic novels are feature length and contain a conclusive story (like a novel). Comics contain a single episode on an ongoing story."

Because Waterstones are vastly more expensive.

Zavvi.co.uk - £10 + free delivery
Play.com - £13.49 + free delivery
Amazon - £10.79 + £2.75 delivery = £13.54
Waterstones - £15.29 + free delivery

And thats only a few of the NINE who were cheaper than Waterstones!

TIAL wrote:Foots would probably call it 'waving your intellectual willy'.

And he would be right to do so!

Online is always cheaper! If you notice I said pop along to your local bookshop not trawl the web looking for comics!

Please quote where you said that. Also, I didn't "trawl" anywhere. I typed it into a search engine and it returned a list. I think that is a hell of a lot quicker than 'popping' along to my local bookshop. If "online is always cheaper" then what exactly is your argument?

If you think that it makes sense to pay £5 a pop extra for a book just because you get that fantastic experience of walking into a shop, then I think it may be you who is the tit.

That would be here

I'm not getting into the argument between bookshops and online. True book lovers will know why bookshops will always be here.

True bargain hunters may ask for advice in a bookshop, but then say 'thanks, I need to go to the cash point, back in a bit' and take the snippet of advice they got and use it online.
