A 50% increase on 2 listeners means they've only got 3 now though.

Yes it is a shame that they have lost that many listeners, but they shouldn't worry. The show today has been very good so far. It's worth making the point if Scott Mills really did cause the drop?

Breaking News!

BBC Radio 3 is attracting more listeners for longer, according to data released today by RAJAR (Radio Joint Audience Research Ltd).

The network – which offers classical music, jazz, world music, drama and arts – recovered from a disappointing performance last quarter to reach 1.91 million listeners every week (up from 1.78m last year and 1.80m last quarter) with a share of 1.2% (up from 0.9% last quarter and 1.1% last year).

Jenny Abramsky, Director, BBC Audio & Music, said: "I'm delighted to see Radio 3 recovering both reach and share – it plays a unique role in shaping the national cultural agenda and is at the intellectual heart of the BBC.

"Radio 4 has followed its Sony Award for Station of the Year with another strong performance and – alongside Radio 5 Live – has illustrated the public's appetite for high-quality speech radio."

The figures – covering the period from 24 March to 22 June 2008 – also show that listening to all BBC Radio has continued to grow year-on-year, while dropping from last quarter's record highs, with a reach of 33.23m (from 33.25m last year and 34.22m last quarter) and a share of 55.5% (from 54.3% last year and 56.8% last quarter).

BBC Radio 1 attracted 10.68 million listeners per week in the quarter – down from 10.87m last year and 11.07m last quarter. Its share – at 10% – has also dropped from last year (10.3%) and last quarter (10.6%).

The Chris Moyles Show has 7.21 million listeners – steady on 7.26m last year and down from a record 7.72m last quarter.

BBC Radio 2 also saw a drop in listeners from last quarter's all-time high, with a weekly reach of 13 million listeners (13.12m last year and 13.63m last quarter). Share at 16% is up on the year (15.6%) but down on the quarter (16.5%).

Wake Up To Wogan has 7.75 million listeners tuning in each week – down on last year's 7.92m and last quarter's record 8.10m. It remains the most popular breakfast show in the country.

BBC Radio 4 has 9.53 million listeners – up on the year (9.48m) and stable on the quarter (9.56m) – and has a share of 12.0%, also up on the year (11.2%) and down a little on the quarter (12.2%).

BBC Radio 5 Live and its digital service BBC 5 Live Sports Extra recorded a combined reach of 6.12 million – up a little on last year's combined total (6.10m) and last quarter (6.09m).

The network was buoyed by 5 Live Sports Extra's contribution of 748,000 listeners to the total.

BBC 6 Music posted its fourth consecutive record reach, with 551,000 listeners – up on both year and quarter.

1Xtra, the BBC Asian Network and BBC 7 all grew their audience year-on-year.

BBC Local and National Radio saw a drop in reach and share, while the BBC World Service remained steady.

The show today was very good, I like the way they're making a joke of it.. I do agree with their comments about how they obtain listening figures - although a cynical man (not me, you understand) may make the point that they lambast the method of collecting figures when they drop listeners, but are quite happy to accept that method when there's a rise.

I don't remember them ever praising Rajar and the way it operates?

Psst - what does Lambast mean?

I think it means critisize(check spelling)

the drop in listening figures isn't a problem, it's is still the best show on the radio!

No, I don't either and I dare say they haven't.. and I agree that the system is far from scientific proof, but they're happy to accept those methods when they've been told that the figures have gone up.

Although I do agree with 'lima eel'.

I have to disagree there, given the choice I'd rather listen to Russel Brand, Chris Evans, Zane Lowe, Jonathan Ross and probably Maconie and Radcliffe ahead of Moyles nowadays.

Controversial, perhaps... and maybe I'm showing my age. But tis the truth and no mistaking.
#352827
Hmm, Moyles is still the number one choice for me. I don't like Russell Brand (and yes I have listened to his radio show).. although I do like Chris Evans and Radcliffe and Maconie. Zane Lowe is good as well, but I prefer Colin Murray in terms of a music-based show.

I said last year that Mills covering would lose them listeners, and Aled was dismissive - its probably not as simple as that really.

.........a breakthrough in our relationship :?

I do like the 'Russell Brand show', maybe Chris Evans a little but . I love Zane, but you can't compare his show to Moyles really, so for what he does and style of show i have to go for moyles as the outright winner.
#352842
I've never been able to listen to Chris Evans. The man usually drives me insane. Although having said that, he may have mellowed now with age. Maybe I should give him another try?

I used to like Russell Brand, but I've gone off him somewhat. Chris Moyles is the only show I make a point of listening to, although I do like Jonathan Ross and Colin Murray too.

The fact Wogan is down by the same kind of percentage is very odd indeed. Although since both Moyles and Wogan were setting records in Q1, I wonder if there was something weird about Q1's figures.

I imagine that as with TV, as the weather gets better, people listen to the radio less. More people walk to work or go out in the mornings. Basically we're less likely to be stuck indoors listening to the radio.
#352913
Don't see why. Its easier to listen to the radio on the move than it is to watch TV on the move. In fact, if anything, I listen to the radio more when I'm on the move!
By Ballbag
#352925
Yeah but those who listen on the move do it because they have no other choice. i.e. on the way to work be it bus or car or foot. You do that winter or summer. But those who listen in the mornings whilst not at work.... sitting around the house doing balls all.... they're more likely to bugger off outside in the mornings if the weather's nicer.

Us "listen on the way to work" lot are a captive audience. I reckon it's the "listen whilst pottering around the house" lot who listen to the radio less in the nicer weather.

Added to that more people holiday in quarter 2 and 3 than they do in quarter 1. It all adds up in the end.
#352936
Yeah, fair point about people finding other things to do. I did kinda guess about the holidays myself too.

As Chris said this morning, if he loses listeners every time over the next 18 months, then it is time to worry. Now? Nah.
#352948
i think that perhaps it can be a good thing to lose a few listeners as it will keep the show on their toes.

Chris Moyles in the morning is a fantastic show - with guests like Ramsey how the hell could he loose anyone :( It's got to be down to that idiot Scott Mills with false laughter, his constant use of 'off of' which I know drives people up the wall. We need any other double act but Chappers and him.
