Having not been abroad for the past billion years, I've decided I am going away somewhere this year. I have the last two weeks of September off work so this is when I am looking at going. I am going with two mates.

One of them is adamant he wants a beach holiday where he can lie and do nothing all day. The other is into wandering about a city - taking in the sights and sounds etc. Personally, I started off wanting to do the walking about a city idea as well, but I'm not a great fan of the heat - I can see me not liking walking about a really hot place.

Therefore - I'm thinking that 'seeing the nightlife' of Tenerife (i.e. getting pissed each night) might be a good call and sleeping all day. On the other hand - Barcelona seems to offer kinda the best of both worlds - we could go out at night, go wandering during the day and my mate can lie on his beach.

What are your opinions of both places? Can you recommend anywhere in particular to go or stay there? Is there anywhere else you would suggest that would keep everyone happy?

At the end of the day - as long as I don't have to go back off to the north of Scotland (where I normally end up) then I'm happy.

Thoughts?

Gdansk in Poland is well worth a visit. We went there a year ago and it has what you seem to be looking for - it's a nice old city with plenty of things to see and has a nearby beach. Plus it's dead cheap and the vodka is great which I know comes high on your priority list. ;)

It's a bit of a wildcard choice so it might be hard to convince your mates (and yourself) to go if you're expecting a standard holiday destination, but it's well worth a visit!

Barcelona is a brilliant place but nothing beats a cruise in my opinion, food 24 hours a day, different location every morning, 4 different pool decks, nightclubs, casino, 14 bars, comedians, west end shows. This time last year i was on a cruise around the med :( .

His whores wouldn't be female.

I'd say the South of France Foots. Marseille has the city living for one guy, and then St. Tropez isn't far either. However, it's quite expensive there, but all you need to do to combat that is just research accommodation first.

I'd recommend Barcelona to anyone. I've been there about 4 times and you're right - you can spend time on the beach, or look round the city.

What to see while you're there depends on your preferences. The Sagrada Familia looks amazing, but I probably wouldn't bother queueing for ages to get inside - just admire it from over the road! The fair on top of Tibidabo is fun, as well as having great views - it's also a bit of an adventure getting up there! The Nou Camp is good for a tour if you like the football thing. The Gothic Quarter is great to wander round with some fantastic buildings. There's also a Cable Car ride from Montjuic to the port which has great views. Barcelona has a "Bus Touristic" where you can buy one or two day tickets and it takes you to the main tourist areas. The tickets allow you to get on and off the bus all day, so it's good to help familiarise yourself with the city.

The temperature at the end of September should be roughly the same as in May, which is when we usually go. I'm not great with the heat either, and although it feels warm, it's certainly not unbearable.

Hopefully all that has been some help to you!

Eygpt is cracking. I went last year and had a great time, if you want to take in all the sites you can, or you can lie in the sun all day and cook. I chose the latter! If you really can't stand the heat it could be a problem as it is around 45 degrees in September.................

I would reccomend Hisaronu in Turkey (www.hisaronu.co.uk). Its about 10 mins on the bus to the sea where there is the Blue Lagoon which is beautiful. Hisaronu has a excellant night life with every type of bar you would want and everyone is very nice. There there lots of day trips out which are not to expensive and you get to see traditional turkey which is a bit of an eye opener.

I have been to Hisaronu twice and stayed at the Asena Village which is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in.

I went Hurgahda 2 years ago and managed to do both the sites and cooking. Very nice holiday and a fantastic place.

Went to Tunisia this year which was nice and actually hotter than Egypt but i still preferred Egypt overall.

You can't edit in ramble bbb.

I've been thinking about this a lot Foots. I would suggest Ibiza because I think it'll give you everything you are looking for - there are quiet areas but you can enjoy the buzz and the nightlife as well. Never been myself.

I loved Tunisia but I doubt it'll be lively enough for you

Sheffield, obviously.

I agree with S4b- Ibiza might be nice. Though I am attracted to the history of Barcelona.
