Sorry, a rat playing with a shower curtain? And very loudly as well? Seriously, there was nothing there, and it all stopped, as I recall, when I put the light on.

People can't see/feel/touch God, but they think it exists. Other people can't see/feel/touch distant galaxies, but they think they exist. I'm not sure why you think your statement holds any water at all.

Vivienne wrote:An explanation for everything? Yet, how come so many things in this life are, indeed, unexplained?

That would be because we haven't found the explanation for things yet. Just like in pre-Newtonian times, we didn't understand how gravity works and now we do (to a certain extent) - it takes time to learn things, unfortunately not everything comes to us so easily.

Vivienne wrote:Well, I've posted this before, but I've had a ghost in the house, making a whole load of noise.... there was NO rational explanation

How do you know there was no rational explanation? Did you go through every single possibility? There's a very huge difference between there not being a rational explanation, and just not knowing the rational explanation.

You'll learn that its really not worth the effort trying to discuss this with her. She is right - end of argument.

* sake. This is such a cyclical argument...Console, can you make a dedicated thread with a timer on it where once a month it digs these squabbles out of the archives and re-posts them? People that were unfamiliar or gave a shit could venture in and the rest of us could just avoid it.

Could we not just do that anyway?

It's impossible to avoid the monthly wrangles because currently they're littered across the entire board. I really liked Lottie's idea that time with the dedicated argument thread. It can automatically re-post the same old arguments time and again, thus becoming a timesaver for Console and Viv. And then in fine print on the main board directory, it could describe what's on in the thread that day. For example:

"Featured Contention of the Day: Console Puts Forth Rational Explanations for the 'Feelings of Unease' Viv Encounters When Entering Certain Buildings"

or

"Spat of the Morning: Viv and Console Debate Whether We Are All 'Soul-less' -- On Special Today in this tiff, a Dedicated Sub-Squabble on Destiny and the Roles it May/May Not Play in Our Lives"

Then at the end it could have a little poll at the top. "Who do you think put forth the best argument in defense of their position? Console or Viv?"

Console would win every time though.

It's not that I don't respect Viv's views - it's that she isn't very good at putting them forward, she doesn't ever sway in her opinion, it reads that she is always right and anyone who disagrees is wrong and she can get very defensive when someone argues with her.

Console, on the other hand, is much better at putting his point across in the written format.

Agreed. He also doesn't resort to fits of hysteria and name-calling in a debate. If she could contain herself, the clashes wouldn't come across as quite so ridiculous.

Are you still rattling on? I've made the fatal mistake of displaying your stuff.

And I agree, Foot-loose, Console is much more articulate than I. I don't debate particularly well. :-)

I've found this interesting quote on another forum:

Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

I like that.

Having faith in something is evidence of its existence? Utter bullshit.

OK, to expand on Chris' example earlier, I believe I can fly. Is this evidence of me being able to do so?

I've said it before, m'darlin, it's not to do with what you say, it's how you say it.
