We still are - and we may even stay there.

People on the BBC Have Your Say forum are making me laugh. Particularly 'Dave Anderson, Stafford':
The UK has appalling educational results. The average yob (and that's the majority of our youth) can't spell and is innumerate. Yet some people talk about training them to further excel in animal pursuits such as sport!

Come on. These brain-dead morons in the Olympics should be encouraged to return to their trees and we should be doing all we can to protect our youth from contamination by contact with them. AND we should be MAKING them learn the three Rs!

That made me belly laugh actually. Cretin.

Andy Baddeley, who has just qualified for the final of the 1500 metres, has a double first from Cambridge.

Wasn't that British cyclist - sorry I forgot her name - studying for a PhD in Europe somewhere too?

Wendy Houvenaghel was an RAF Squadron leader, and a dentist, is that who you meant?

hmm not sure, is she the one who helped her team mate in one race and then got silver in the time trial thingy?

That reminds me of another of my favourite blogs - http://ifyoulikeitsomuchwhydontyougolivethere.com/ The BBC 'Have Your Say' section is a goldmine of cretinous opinions.

As for the double posting - I think it's fine in this thread as the games are at a weird time and it's nice to be updated in the morning.

He's an intellectual and grammatical powerhouse. Starting a sentence with a conjunction is proof of that.

No, Wendy Houvenhaghel is a track cyclist, you're on about road racing and it was Emma Pooley who helped Nicole Cooke out and then won silver herself.

It is, I usually take a peek if I'm bored and looking for a laugh.

* me, Sarah Claxton has qualified for the 100m hurdles final! She was the slowest in her semi by a mile on paper, best I've ever seen her run. She's a Colchester lass so I've been reading about her since she was a schoolgirl athlete. She started as a heptathlete and only decided to specialise a couple of years ago. Bless her, she is hysterical!

I've just read that, I'd have liked to have seen it. She must have run a cracking race though!

I expect three or four medals in track and field overall, hopefully one gold (triple jump, obviously). I'm really, really hoping Greg Rutherford can pull off a medal in his long jump.

We might get something in the womens 400m flat. And Tasha Danvers is getting stronger in the 400m hurdles too, but a medal would be a tall order. I read something about chances in the javelin? I don't know anything about that though. We might get a couple of relay medals, the womens 400m looks strong and the men usually manage to do something somewhere. Only one possible gold though I reckon.

Still, more to come in the sailing and cycling so we aren't done yet.

Yeah, I can't remember the name of the javelin thrower, but she's supposedly in with a shout.

That was mighty close for Marlon Devonish! He was very unlucky, it showed him with exactly the same time as Kim Collins, who qualified ahead.. did they go down to three decimal places to get it absolutely right? If they explained it, I didn't hear it as I've got it on silent. I hope he can get through as a fastest loser, anyway.

...and Christian Malcolm is also unlucky! My word, some of these are close.

Malcolm and Devonish both qualified.

So they did.. it would have been pretty hard, particularly on Devonish, if they hadn't. Ms Danvers is through too I see.

Interesting to hear Kelly Holmes and Steve Ovett talking about Christine Ohuruogu's chances of gold in the 400m today.. personally I'd say she has very, very little chance and that her best chance is silver (though she has got a very good chance of that.) Sanya Richards is just too strong.

After her "forgetting" to turn up for drugs testing, I hope Ohurugo comes nowhere to be honest.

That is a good point, it's double standards as far as Dwain Chambers is concerned (I agree Chambers should be banned for life.) I'd still tip her for silver though.

Right, the cycling sprint event's just silly. Not only are they doing anything but sprinting for 90% of it, it seems you can fall off your bike and still win.

I don't totally get why they do all that hanging about, except for the fact that you can sprint a bit more in the final stages if you conserve your energy, perhaps? Even that doesn't really add up with how slow they are going though.

If you just ride a bloc for the whole race you will allow your opponent to use your slipstream to gain a massive advantage over the last bend. All the messing about is to avoid that happening.

I'm sure with the extra gear that Chris Hoy seems to have against everyone, no one would be getting near his slipstream anyway.

I think bearing that in mind, its probably safe to assume that if Chris Hoy rides the sprint in that cagey way, cagey is the best way to ride the sprint.
