We had a thread somewhere a while back about lyrics or words that people found inspiring (that was Viv's as well I believe) and I posted the third verse of Bridge Over Troubled Water as being particularly uplifting for me - well, the whole song is really, but the third verse particularly so. I will never get tired of listening to that.

Actually, I prefer standing in the crowd at Celtic Park when it is being belted out by 60,000 people. I've never been to Anfield, but I imagine the experience is similar. Stuff that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. It doesn't translate as well over the telly.

I hear the Gerry & The Pacemakers version more than any other so its familiar to me rather than being good or bad.

Oh, good, passionate communal singing is always great - we don't do it well in England though. I don't know about the Scots, but really, for that, you need a Welsh rugby crowd. Outstanding.

Actually, that's a good point. Our anthems suck. Flower of Scotland is a dirge, only beaten by the most boring sounding anthem in the world - God Save The Queen. The Welsh anthem on the other hand is uplifting and sounds really impressive when sung. Hard to beat the Russian anthem on the hair raising stakes, but it's certainly better than anything else in the UK.

Better still, the Scots don't really have anything decent. Scotland the Brave is just daft and no one knows the words. Scots Wha Hae would be much better, but even fewer people know the words to that. Yet England doesn't have have the same problem. You want an uplifting, impressive sounding tune that people might actually know the words to? Try Land of Hope and Glory! But no, they persist with that dirge. Except at the Commonwealth Games if I remember rightly. But then Northern Ireland has Danny Boy at those, while at the football they use God Save the Queen too! Mad.

Flower of Scotland is an alright song, a bit repetative maybe though. Highland Cathedral is a great tune, it just seems to lack any words. Scotland the Brave i believe IS our national anthem, and agreed - it's pish.
