Seriously, Alonso's not what he's cracked up to be. Watch him in any game where the opposition close him down quickly, he needs too much time on the ball, ends up losing it and usually gets himself booked when tackling to get it back, he'd be ace in Italy. Barry's better suited to the premiership but not £18 million better suited.

In the season 05/06 Alonso was a great player for liverpool, but over the last few seasons he has been terrible which why we need Gareth Barry

I'll take both your words for it - you have watched him a lot more than I have. I can't believe Barry is worth that money though.

I think we need him more at the Community Stadium. Mind you, if we had 18 million, we'd probably have to spend it on finishing the damn thing.......

Liverpool can't really talk you tried to get 10M out of Villa for Carson and sold him to West Brom for something like 3.3M. If Arsenal put an offer in for 14 or 15 million, I think we would still say no but we would be more interested. What goes around, comes around.

Welll, if it wasn't for those pesky Croatians, you'd have probably bought him for 10 million :D

And there we have an object lesson in why no one with any sense shops in the Premiership. The money is insane.

Yeah, heard that result come in last night - Kevin Lisbie must be about 90 now mustn't he?

Oh, and Nemanja Vidic : "In England, they say that Manchester is the city of rain. Its main attraction is considered to be the timetable at the railway station, where trains leave for other, less rainy cities." . I chortled at that.

I like Nemanja Vidic. I'm not surprised he's got a witty way with words. Not that he isn't also accurate.

Damn good player an'all. The various Serbs in the office were banging on about him a good few years before Utd bought him.

Mind you, he needs to take a long hard look at Belgrade before slagging off cities over here. Admittedly it's nice in the summer but, lordy, bits are run down - which may have to do with it being repeatedly shelled a few years back but, still.

I've been to Manchester for football twice. Roy Keane's testimonial, and then a few months later when we played them in the Champions League. Both days were absolutely scorching, sunny days.

What rain?

Since we're in pot 3, I want Liverpool in the Champions League draw tomorrow after watching that rubbish last night. When are they going to get rid of that negative, tactically inept moron they have in charge of the team?

Thing is, all the Liverpool fans I know seem to love Benitez. Anything that goes wrong is somehow (god knows how) the owner's fault - its never the manager, or god forbid, the players. Are they not seeing what everyone else is seeing?

The best thing Liverpool could do is to get a new manager. I'm happy that they don't seem to agree though.

Yes we blame the owners for lots of things because what fans of others club dont seem to able to understand is that we had a chairman before in david moores that loved our club but didnt have the money to take this club forward,so he sold out to the yanks, they came in saying we have money to build a new ground and buy top class players,

over 18 months later the new ground is no closer and all the players have been bought with loans so the club is worse off now then before the yanks came in

you agreed to buy carson for that price last year if the loan was turned into a full time move so thats your own fault for agreeing to price you felt was'nt fair

I do get that - but over the last three years apparently Liverpool have spent more on new players than even Chelsea have (although they are trying to catch up this year it seems) - and have nothing to show for it. That's the basis of the club's poor performance (relatively speaking) and surely that is to do with Benitez, nothing to do with the owners? And if the owners are giving Benitez a hard time - well, wouldn't you?!

i dont know if we have spent more then chelsea (but i dont think we have done) the point is chelsea dont have to sell to buy we do so we cant get stronger which wasnt the plan when the yanks bought into the club

Apparently Liverpool are the top spenders taken over the last four seasons as a whole. I must admit I found that surprising, but it does underline how little you have to show for it. And yes, I can see how the selling-to-buy thing is a difference. But the bottom line is still that your manager is (apparently) wasting a lot of money and (definitely) not getting the best out of the players he has got. Whatever the problems are, I would have thought that the buck stops with him - although he clearly doesn't think so.

I kind of hope they get it together (she said through gritted teeth) - the Premiership needs Liverpool to be strong.

Actually, what really * me off about last night, even more than Liverpool's seeming inability to string a sentence together, let alone 2 passes, was the constant banging on about how much money was riding on the game - as if that's the most important thing about the whole competition. Maybe I'm wrong and the money is the be all and end all in the champions league, if that's the case I'm off to watch Thamesmead Town FC.
