As pretty much everyone knows, I'm off to uni in just over a weeks time. I have no idea what to take and so was hoping that some of you would have some ideas of things that I may not have thought of. So far I have pots and pans, cutlery, some kitchen utensils, an iron, a kettle, and my own stuff. Any more things I might need?

Pens? Paper? Files and folders?

Raid the cupboards at home and see what food there is. Also a sandwich toaster is a good plan!

Ooh sandwich toaster, I hadn't thought of that. I have the stationary as well. :)

Towels. Dishtowels. Alarm clock to wake you up for lectures. A stress ball for exam-times! Sufficient stationery: you'll be making a lot of notes at lectures & tutorials.

Well done, btw :-)

O, more important than pots & pans: It's a BIG jump from school, and it's important to stick at it! :)

These may be obvious to you but:
Bring lots of passport sized photos. You'll need them to put on ID cards and the photo booths always have massive queues when you get there.
A meal for the first night. You'll be busy on the first day and going to Sainsburys will be the last thing on your mind!
A bottle of wine always helps too, good to share with new people and calmed my nerves when I first got there.
Internet cable to plug in your computer (I forgot mine in freshers week and couldn't find one to buy).
A couple of folders to put all the paperwork from your enrollment in. I didn't do that and lost quite a few important pieces of paper.
If you're bringing a TV make sure you remember to get a license.
A wallet/purse with lots of space for new cards to fit in.
A door stop to prop open your door when you arrive. People tend to walk around and say hi - they're more likely to do so if your door is open.
Lots of money to get drunk on Fresher's Week!

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Thanks Viv.

Oh, and say no to free Tequila. They had people going round handing shots out and my first night was over rather swiftly!

My friend used to bring green food dye to drip in his milk so nobody would nick any!

I stayed at home during my four years of uni (real education in Scotland, none of your three year nonsense!) and its probably the one thing I'd change if I did it again.

Although I've got a job and a house now, so that's not going to happen!

Oh yeah, and I always had a helpful mate's floor to kip on when I did go out, so its not like I missed out! I just didn't go out as much.

Tial's list is fantastic. I can think of lots of things I would take IF I was being taken there in a car - but if, as I assume, you are doing it all by train, I reckon you have it covered.

All the very best, and well done too.

I'm going in a car now. :) The youth worker at church has offered to take me up, so that I can take all my stuff I need.

Some sort of lockable box to hide anything valuable in, the locks on doors at halls are rubbish and can easily be forced or fooled into opening so you'll need something to keep any serious valuables: passport, Keys for home, emergency cheese etc in....

Why would I need emergency cheese?

Also, it's never too early to start thinking about houses for 2nd year. In Oxford, most of the good houses go before Christmas and I hear it's the same in lots of other places. I found it a nightmare because I didn't expect to have to pick people to live with (and a house to live in) so quickly.
