This week sees the return of Zane Lowe's 'Masterpieces', a special series where he has documentaries on each 'groundbreaking' album before playing the album in full - with no editing, idents or DJ patter.
Here's the first lot of albums, played last year:

Nirvana - Nevermind
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
The Strokes - Is This It
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV

And here's the ones that are being played this week:

Radiohead - 'OK Computer' - 31 March
Public Enemy - 'It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back' - 1 April
The Libertines - 'Up The Bracket' - 2 April
Guns N' Roses - 'Appetite For Destruction' - 3 April

What do people think about these choices? Are there any glaring mistakes? What would you put in next time? Does anyone actually care? :D

I think all of those are good choices - as to the other three questions, I don't know!
Particularly looking forward to Radiohead and The Libertines and I know someone who will be thrilled about the last one too!

Unfortunatley Radiohead was last night but you can listen again etc.

I personally don't think that OK Computer was as good as Kid A, which is still my favourite Radiohead album (and goes in my top 10 of all time), but I understand that overall it's probably the former that has the majourity vote.
I'm looking forward to Public Enemy tonight - it definitley deserves credit as one of the masterpieces, as it moved hip hop into the golden age of when it actually had something to say about society. Before (and indeed, after) that era, rap was just party music with big egos. Public Enemy changed that.
The Libertines will be great too, I just love listening to that in the car.

I think Radiohead are overrated, but I'll be looking forward to Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Thought I might resurrect this thread in light of this week's masterpieces.

Monday: The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
Tuesday: Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine
Wednesday: Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
Thursday: The Prodigy - Music For The Jilted Generation

Good choices? I'm really enjoying tonight's Rage night. What album would you put in if you had the power?

Me too! Glaringly beneath the other groups on the list in my opinion. I don't really get this whole album from start to finish business, I can do that at home or in the car. I understand it may introduce new people to classic albums, but the cynical side of me says it's lazy radio.

I think, as Zane said on Moyles t'other day, people download individual singles nowadays- whereas the bands still make complete albums. Not enough people listen to full albums now, and I think Radio 1 is really brave for doing it. There is something to be said for listening to a whole album in full, as Dark Side of the Moon will prove tomorrow night.

It might be 'lazy' to play the whole album in full, but I think it's well worth doing for those who haven't been exposed to listening to music in this way. Plus, the effort put in to the hour documentary before the album is played justifies Radio 1 having an hour off in my opinion.

And I can't wait for Aled's review of Rage Against the Machine tomorrow morning. :D

To be honest by making that comment I'm expecting a bashing! For me, I very rarely listen to singles, or buy singles, if I'm in the car I'll listen to an album from start to finish. The only time singles enter the equation is obviously radio. I was brought up om albums (the proper vinyl ones!), and I think then you were less likely to skip tracks as you had to get up and move the stylus! Or even worse fast forward the tape! Being 32 I'm not target audience, so R1 probably couldn't give a toss what I think.

I have all the albums apart from the Stone Roses one. Good to see Pink Floyd in there as well, one of my favourite bands.

Unfortunately I do not get a chance to listen to Zane in the evenings, the better half would much rather have 'How to look naked' or some shit like than on than listen to decent music!!

Quite looking forward to hearing Aled's 'review' tomorrow for Dark Side, he's going to absolutely hate it.

I'm mainly a single's man (make of that what you will) although most of that is a result of having been a DJ. There are a few albums where I like all the songs (Prodigy Experience, Fat Of The Land, Offspring - Smash, Terrorvision - HTMFAIP etc) but I couldn't name any album tracks by Kaiser Chiefs or Razorlight.

I think these are a fantastic idea. It gives a chance for people like me who have heard all about how great Dark Side of the Moon is the chance to hear it for ourselves without actually going out to buy it. If it really is as good as we've heard, we'll be buying it shortly afterwards.

Yay Dark Side of the Moon tonight! That really is an album that has to be heard in full.

I think Aled might actually quite like some of it, he was open-minded enough to like some of the Rage album, which I thought he'd absolutely hate.

Bonanzoid wrote:Good choices, but I'm feeling a bit skeptical about the Prodigy.

As per my previous post, I love the prodigy and listen to their first three albums quite regularly. I recently dug out Music For The Jilted Generation and have been listening to it for a while. It's got some really powerful hard tracks juxtaposed by the narcotic suite at the end. Their law is a personal favourite.

Oh and as for what albums I would have on their.

I would like to stick on Tusk by Fleetwood Mac in it's entirety. Just as Lindsay Buckingham intended.

Personally I'd put on:

Michael Jackson - Thriller
Chronic 2001 - Dr. Dre
Kid A - Radiohead
Discovery - Daft Punk
Kind of Blue - Miles Davis (not a CHANCE!)

That's all I can think of right now. Loving Dark Side right now!

Really enjoyed Pink Floyd tonight. Not heard it before apart from money. Very weird and psychadelic but great. May even buy it.

What will be on in 5 years time do you think?

Oasis - What's the Story Morning Glory
Kaiser Chiefs - Employment

That's all I can think of actually. Oh and of course in the Year 3000 we'll all be listening to Busted's 7th Album.

Zane keeps hinting that they'll be featuring an Oasis album as a masterpiece in the near future, so it may be less than 5 years!

Maybe a few to consider to be played in the future are:
Klaxons - Myths of the Near Future
Fatboy Slim - Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars
Muse - Origin of Symetry

I love this album! It'd be awesome to hear this fully on the radio.

Yeah, it's a great album. Whilst it's probably not fit to be seen as a 'masterpiece' just yet, it had influenced so many bands recently and might be the album that is responsible for a new era of electro-rock in the future.

Not heard of The Klaxons but the Muse one definitely. Fatboy Slim is a good choice but I would go with You've come a long way baby. Far better singles. What's Gutter and the Stars got? Weapon of choice and that's about it. Better Living Through The Chemistry was great too.

You've come a long way was Norman (Quentin!) at his finest. He was on top of the world then. Producing massive hits but retaining his original big beat style. After that he was so busy remixing everyone else's stuff he kinda didn't bother with the third album.

Actually as for muse I'd play all their albums one after the other if it were up to me.

Oh and Therapy - Screamager is another album I like listening to all the tracks on.
