Have to admit, I occasionally pick up a Metro if I'm going to Edinburgh on business. I like the letters page. Brings back memories of our weekly lab challenge at uni to see who could get a letter published first. I think we managed 7 letters in a week once.

But even then, I haven't picked up a Metro since I got my iPhone.

Ive never understood the letters bit - although some of the replies make me laugh. Its like a message forum, but really really slow.

Ahh, it was funny as a student. They're still occasionally amusing. But no longer sufficiently enough to bother picking up the Metro.

Even television news (BBC News 24 and Sky News particularly) are a hundred times better and more useful than newspapers. What with the availability of those, and as you say, the internet, why anyone buys newspapers at all these days, even the supposedly "good" ones, is beyond me.

I buy a local paper most days, it is interesting and you can "drop in and out" whilst doing other things. It is also private, not like the TV.
I also find it useful for lighting the fire with, and lining the Rabbit cage, two things Mrs Boboff would object to me doing with the TV or her laptop.

I do occasionally pick up the local paper, I agree, they can be useful for all sorts of things!

They can't even be used as chip wrappers due to health and safety these days. But yes, they are good for rabbits to pee on. Poetically an excellent comment on some of the stuff they publish.

Its ok. They have too many things scrolling across the screen, and I agree the presentation can be gimmicky, but they get proper news and they get it quick. Quicker than the BBC often.

They might be fast, but they really overuse the breaking news thing. That should be reserved for really important stuff. The Olympic lane landing at Heathrow isn't one. Unless I've accidently flicked over to Sky Sports News, and even then it's pushing it.

I wouldn't be surprised if they went the opposite way and made your screen flash with OMFG NEWS!!!!!1 for the big things though.

Is Sky News on Freeview? I've never bothered to find out, just use the BBC.

Yep - Sky News and Sky Sports News are both Freeview. I like Sky Sports News on a Saturday afternoon.

Jeff Stelling is quite mad. Just enough that I actually sit and watch Soccer Saturday when we're playing on Saturday lunch time or Sunday.

He is funny - I enjoy laughing at Phil Thompson and one or two of the others. Paul Merson occasionally gets away with murder - it would never be allowed on the BBC!

Soccer Saturday is great, I prefer watching that to the actual games at times, more for the pundits reactions & the mighty Jeff Stelling banter with them & of course his rather odd second support for East Stirling FC

Well at the time the BBC was dragging out every news story so the ITV News Channel was ok for me, but considering the mess ITV has become perhaps it's best it doesn't exist anymore

I have taken to watching World Business briefing on BBC at 5.30, it very well done the girl doing it at the moment is called something like Jenny Lovecock, which makes me smile. The news that is on from 5 a.m. is exactly the news Dom reads out every day, I think he must just have it on Series link, watches it, makes notes and comes to work.(I know !)

Two years ago, I think, it went, partially due to viewers but also because of the CITV channel. ITV wanted it so that they could do away with CITV on ITV1 altogether & the ITV News Channel became timeshifted before finally being given the boot.

I would rather the BBC took their time to get the story right rather than rushing to tell us as fast as possible. There is very little that happens in the world that is going to make a HUGE difference if I don't hear about it for half an hour.

Sky and BBC both beat ITV News cos ITV News doesn't exist.

How is that different to any other industry? Everyone is out to make money, otherwise they wouldn't be there, no?

I also think it is hugely unfair for so many people in this thread to lash out at all newspapers when it is, to my understanding, only the Mail and the Mirror who are printing shit? The others aren't; why take it out on them too?

The media (and particularly newspaper) industry is renowned for being sensationalist and if the others aren't printint shit about this, they normally are about something else.

And the fact is, as has been said by others, online news aggregators and web sites and 24 hour news channels absolutely negate the need for newspapers now.
