Our village (well, my mum's village's) fourth annual Christmas ball made me smile last night - cracking night. Although apparently at mum's afterwards I had quite a little rant at why on earth Scottish people think it's OK to wear a kilt when the ticket says 'smart dress'.

I still stand by it though.

It is our traditional dress. Oddly, the only folk I have ever heard have an issue with it are Engerlish - granted, I speak to more of you lot thank other outlanders so that may be why, but frankly - it comes across as a bit jealous. Feel free to deny that.

Me in my kilt >>> me in my suit.

Anyway, that point made, making me smile today and knocking all the things that have annoyed me this week into the completely unimportant pile... Meeting my new little brother who was born this afternoon.

Absolutely I will - if it looked good, other countries would have copied. To my knowledge, no one has yet and kilts are not a new thing.

Traditional does not necessarily equal smart at all.

I find that the looks of most men are dramatically improved when wearing a kilt.

But the whole point of the kilt... actually the highland dress - there is more to it than just the kilt bit - is the history and heritage that comes with it. You can't just adopt something like that.

What you are saying is that one group of people should drop something they have been doing for hundreds of years cos it doesn't fit in with what you deem to be 'right'.

While I have no problem with your opinion that it isn't smart - I don't quite get why you had "quite a little rant" about it though? I don't know what the guy you are talking about was wearing, but I guess he paid considerable money to either hire or buy the outfit - it's not a cheap get-up. What were you wearing last night? Shirt and tie?

By the way, I'm half joking - but I still don't think it looks smart.

The only photo I can find of the fella I was on about:

How depressing is it that my brother's five years younger than me and towers above me.

I think Scotchlanders in formal dress (ie the kilt) are fab - I know I may have said otherwise before, but I was probably just trying to wind footloose up.

However - would it wind up Scotchlanders if I pointed out that the kilt is actually Irish, the Scots nicked it from them? So I'm told anyway.

Ooops double post. Someone's already put this on. Well, it's so good it deserves to be watched twice.

On the subject on kilts, I think they should be classed as 'smart'. They look great on MOST men. Just a question to all the kilt wearers on here, do you always go commando, or is that a myth?

Kilts are smart. I went to a wedding in Edinburgh, and although I was dressed in a suit I felt much less smart than all the guys in kilts. They'd gone the whole 9 yards and were wearing all the regalia and other gubbins though.

The Scots ARE Irish. The indigenous people of this part of Great Britain are actually the Picts.

I nearly got punched for that argument once. Long story involving Old Firm moronosity. Which isn't a word but bloody well should be.

Nice to see George at Asda won't be going out of business anytime soon.

Oh and when my mate got married the best man and the ushers all wore kilts in his family colours but did wear underwear as theirs were rented. I'm sure they'd been cleaned but even so......

Sadly with my new short hair and glasses. All I'd need to do would be to get a stick on Bruce Forsythe chin and spend £29.99 on a suit and I think I'd look a bit like you...obviously a much better looking version but still the resemblence would be uncanny.

I realise that - but it's not. It's M&S and before people say anything, there's nothing wrong with that either.

  • That is sad (for me).
  • That cost more than £30.
  • It wouldn't take too much to look better than me. Doesn't make you particularly good-looking.
