Lewis Hamilton MBE - brilliant, all in favour of that.
Rebecca Adlington OBE - what? So you win two gold medals four years ago and it gets you a Dame, yet this time round it's only an OBE? Is running > swimming in the eyes of the Queen (well, the people that do these lists in her name)? Better than that, we win medals on the track all the time - that was our first swimming gold in 40 years! And she got TWO!!!!

What's the order of these things anyway? Bradley Wiggins is getting a CBE for his two medals, and I'm getting the feeling that OBE > CBE and he's been screwed again.

Is there ever any logic to what award you get?

Yeah, very much deserved (well, far more than the other celebrities that tend to get them.) I agree with Munki Bhoy on Adlington, though she's going to be around for at least one other Olympics, so perhaps she'll get her chance.

Also, Liz Smith seems like a genuinely brilliant person and I can't begrudge her getting anything.

I agree with Munki Bhoy on Adlington..

I don't. Kelly Holmes won her events at the end (she was in her mid thirties, possibly older) of a long and eventful career which began when she was a serving Army officer. She had achieved and almost achieved a hell of a lot in Commonwealth, European and World competition time and time again, only to have her hopes ruined by injury after injury, some of them career-threatening. Partly because of her assumption that her injuries would prevent her competing at top level again, she began to do a lot of voluntary work with young athletes and schools, and inspired thousands of kids across the country to take up sport for enjoyment, not by being a famous medal-winning athlete but by working directly with them in schools and clubs.

That's why Kelly Holmes was made a Dame (whatever that means) and Rebecca Adlington wasn't. Tell Becky to come back in 15 or 20 years, see what she's up to then.
