How do people screw-up like that? It's not as if the quote and PM buttons look similar; they're also on opposite sides of the screen.

In case anyone cares, I was right about the swimming pool if it were empty. Which it wasn't so no one will.

Better, the 390 answer was definitely wrong due to the 45 degree angle complication.

It's not wrong. That is why I divided the 10x12x1.5 by 2 as the 45 degree angle means that the shape of the wedge is half of the square. As I have included the top meter of that part of the pool in the first bit, it is spot on, and you are wrong.

Don't argue maths with an accountant.

I just PM'd the answer to the question before last because I didn't realise that there was a whole other page to go. I am really rubbish at this kind of thing.

So you honestly think that for the last 10 metres of the pool it sloped at a 45 degree angle and only goes from 1m depth to 2.5m depth?

Yes of course

There are three internal angles, one is 90(the angle where the wall meets the surface), and the one we know is 45, therefore the other has to be 45 as the internal sum of the angles is 180.

This would give the length of the floor over the course of the slope to the end of the bottom of the pool would be 10.112 meters long.

You are wrong. Live with it.

Thinking it through though, and I am not saying sorry, but you can't have a pool which decreases at a 45 degree angle to a depth of 1.5 meters. I have lost my scientific calculator so can't work it, but it would be more like 12.5 degrees not 45.

So Munki you were overall more right than I was given the question was flawed, but I wasn't wrong!

Now of course how sad is it even to be worried! I need a life.

That's one of the funniest three post combos I've seen on a forum ever.

Anyway, you're right if the angle's wrong. 8.5 degrees roughly according to my computer's scientific calculator.

I think we both need lives. Although that's probably the most I've used trigonometry since I left school.

I'm going to hijack this thread for the following because it's not worth starting another one.... PM answers. This question was apparently asked in a job interview and the successful candidate was apparently chosen (out of 200 applicants), in a large part, due to his answer to this question.

You are driving along in your car on a wild, stormy night. You pass by a bus stop and you see three people waiting for the bus: an old lady who looks as if she is about to die; an old friend who once saved your life; the perfect man (or woman) you have been dreaming about. Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing that there could only be one passenger in your car.

Think about it carefully - you could pick up the old lady, because she is going to die, and thus you should save her first; or you could take the old friend because he once saved your life, and this would be the perfect chance to repay him. However, you may never be able to find your perfect dream lover again.

The candidate who was hired had no trouble coming up with his answer. What was it?

I'd say pick up the fit bird. A mate would understand and if the old dear is about to die well then she's not gonna miss much.

...you can only take one passenger.

Yudwuk has it, apparently it's quite well known.

Munki Bhoy, Console and Bonanzoid also got it. I think in hindsight it was a bit easy... I didn't get it though!

Righty. About 85 of you PMd me an answer to the latest question. Some of you got it right, others got the second bit wrong. I canna be arsed replying to all of you, so if your answer agrees with whats below... congrats:

foot-loose wrote:Small Change
Although very old coins tend to be worth more than their face value, why is it that 1980 five cent bits are worth about $100?

1980 refers to the quanity, not the date, so 1980 5 cent pieces equals $99. I would accept "what topher said" as an answer.

foot-loose wrote:Jack made a bet with Jill. 'I bet you one pound that if you give me two pounds, I will give you three pounds in return'. 'Sounds good to me' said Jill. But is it?

Not from Jill's point of view. If she gives him two pounds, Jack can renege on the deal and only needs to hand over one pound, thereby making a one pound profit for himself.

The answer "they would both end up the same" and "jill would end up wih one pound" are not good enough.

Oh right, so the correct answer is "Jack's better off, he's a prick". Cool, I wasn't expecting that one.

Somehow, the romantic "happily every after" story I had imagined sounds a whole lot different when you're * her in a bus stop. Classy.
