Hi, i'm a newbie. I'm 23, i've been listening to the show on and off since they did afternoons (is it just me or was it better in the afternoons?).

Down to business, todays show isn't on the iplayer. Having a quick look at one of the Snowden posts some1 said it had been removed? I think this is the second time in recent weeks a show has disappeared off the iplayer, i can't be sure, but where do i go to listen to it now? Also, why has it been taken down? Did Chris say something relating to the deaths on Snowden? If so what? Even then, is that a reason to take down the show?

On a side note, i've just put on greg james show to listen to instead, and about 13 mins in he's playing beat freaks - somebody's watching me, with what sounds like Chris saying 'good morning' over the top. Is this a song that has been taken from the 'radio 1 machine', that Chris has used for the golden hour and has pre-recorded his improvs over? If that is the case i feel somewhat cheated, i guess i just figured chris did that stuff off the cuff and live. Although you can't complain as its still good radio.

No, I meant the TV show - it was a reference to your username, obviously a coincidence.

my username stems from the fact i use the name dave for all my online stuff. and a few weeks back i upgraded to vista, and didn't back up the passwords for some of my forum accounts etc. so i had to register again for a bunch of places, and so i added 'is shiny' as vista is kinda shiny. since then thats what i've been using for the odd site here and there.

You sure can! Mythbusters proved it last season :P. Apart from hefty RAM usage, and the fact its a nightmare to navigate around to setup compared to xp its not actually that bad. I don't mind the RAM usage tho as i went from 4GB in 32bit xp (so it read as 3GB) to Vista 64bit where although it uses 1GB of RAM just to look at the desktop that was the gig i wasn't using in xp anyway. At least thats how i look at it.

Ah, well I'm sure the more technical members of the forum will have something to say about that. I went back to XP because Vista started crashing a lot. I liked it when it worked, though ;)

As we're on the subject of Vista; on Friday, I actually discovered a benefit for using Vista over XP, the automatic hard-drive failure detection program (a built-in S.M.A.R.T. program) actually visually warns the user as opposed to just making an entry in the event log. I'm not saying that it's worth the price-tag, the hassle or the reduced performance (I'm also not saying the the detection worked particularly well - I was there over an hour, having witnessed four crashes before it informed me that the crashes may have been due to the hard-drive dying), but it was, after two years of the thing infecting machines, the first time I'd seen an bright-side to Vista. Certainly a day to remember.

They were very thorough as well. Experimenting with different turds and different methods. In the end they concluded that the best way to polish a turd was with bare hands and a fair amount of time.

Any comment on the chris improv on the greg james show i mentioned in the first post?

Using more RAM to be more annoyed you can't find anything is a good thing? Okay.

The question shouldn't be "Is Vista good?" it should be "Is Vista an improvement over XP?" This is the point most people miss. In most sensible tests the answer is no. With a few exceptions of course, as Console has stated.

Windows 7 (the follow up to Vista) would appear to be what Vista was supposed to be. Reports are that it will be out towards the end of this year. It's basically got all the benefits of sticking with XP while adding the improvements that Vista did make as well as some it should have made but didn't.

From a personal perspective, Vista finally pushed me to use Linux it was so bad. There are certain things it still can't do, but the majority of things I need it to do it does well. I speak from both a home user perspective and an office user perspective on this one - I've been using Ubuntu on my work laptop for a year. The major sticking points there have been .NET development and the new Office 2007 document formats. Bug then they're both Microsoft's products. At home, iTunes is the biggest problem. Using a Mac would make that issue go away of course. But I've never really got my head round Macs. I know others who swear by them though.

And that's the key. Everyone has their preferences. There's no perfect answer to which one you should use. But what I do know is the answer definitely isn't Vista. Keep XP and wait for Seven, change to a Mac or Linux. Just don't go near that awful half added attempt at an OS. The bad far outweighs the good.

The reason i made the switch from XP to Vista is because in XP i had some god aweful irq problems. I never pinned down what the conflict was but i think it was a two of, or a combination of, my wireless card, my sound card and one or more of my usb devices. Symptoms were random disconnects of my mouse and keyboard, and a machine that previously booted up in sub 30 second times taking many minutes to boot for no apparent reason.

The main reason i still use Windows OS over Linux is because I game a fair amount, and linux IMO isn't a gamers OS. If that changes, i'd switch right away. Also IMO the people who swear by macs have more money than sense :P, no offence intended with that tho, there's nothing wrong with having a boat load of cash :P. One thing i have noticed is that development for games seems to be DX10 and therefore Vista oriented. My MMO of choice atm is Lord of the Rings Online, and while crash to desktops while zoning (loading screen between map change) were a common occurrence. In Vista, thats yet to happen.

As for 7 it doesn't seem like it'll be much different to Vista, and i'm not convinced it'll perform a whole lot better either. Mind you, thats what service packs are for. Regardless, there's no way i'm going back to XP.

Old topic, sorry.

But todays show dosent seem to be on the Iplayer which is a pain in the backside. I wanted to listen back to Chris doing his live bit from the mountain this morning.

Does anybody know if something was said out of place on the show or perhaps anything that might meen it is delayed?

Or even simpler, the Iplayer has problems?
