I've climbed kili. It was quite easy, but definately not boring. There were completely different ecoregions each day and depending on your route you even came down a different way, with new scenery. There's one route that the americans take, which is paved. I'd imagine that one's quite boring, but hopefully he'll be doing a decent walk.

He'll make it. Easy. Unless of course he does get hit by the altitude sickness. I was lucky (but I've heard it hits fit people - something I'm definately not)

Its a challenge which i hope Chris can rise too, however i have heard conflicting opinions on how hard the climb is so i wish him the best. What a star studded bunch he is going up with. (Garry Barlow etc)

Just out of interest, who else would you add to the list of people attempting to climb with Chris if you could ??? :)

Good luck to him. I'm sure he'll make it, especially if it's done for charity.

From my (very limited) experience, coming down is harder. That might just be me though. I was up Ben Arthur (aka The Cobbler) yesterday and I certainly found it harder on me physically coming down.

You all know I'm talking about hills, right? Just because Play.com delivered the new Girls Aloud album this morning...

What would be the point of that?

Now i think about it that is pretty pointless.

riksweeney,

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Kilimanjaro is not a technical climb - meaning you don't need technical climbing experence - but it is a very very tough trek that numerous people fail to do every year.

If you think it is easy go ahead and try it and let us all know how you get on. I'm guessing you won't make it to very far...

Its also not boring. Being a free-standing mountain near the equator you get to trek through a number of different climatic zones such as savanah, rail forest, moorland, alpine desert, higj desert etc, and the views are mostly incredible.

Where did you get your information from? or did you just make it up....?

Kilimanjaro is far from a boring climb. As had been said before on this thread, each day the scenery changes as you travel through the different eco-zones. The views as you get higher are just breath-taking.

Its not a technical climb, no climbing with ropes required, but a bit of scrambling around on rocks, depending on which route you take.

Will Chris make it? I don't know, the biggest potential problem will be altitude sickness, doesn't matter how fit you are, altitude sickness affects all. If Chris isn't fit enough though he could suffer from exhaustion, guess he just better get down the gym a lot ;)

Heres a short vid of when I got near to the summit back in September '08.

I'll look forward to hearing how Chris and the rest of his group get on!

If the BBC are wanting to set a new record for broadcasting live from Mount Kilimanjaro then they are too late. NBC News incorporating The Today Show and Nightly News with Brian Williams got there first.

As part of The Today Show's Annual "To the ends of the earth" this year they sent Ann Curry up the Mountain to report on the changing face of the environment. The theme was water with Matt Lauer going to Belize, where he had reported on the threat to coral reefs and marine life. Meredith Vieira went to Australia looking at how the lack of water is having a impact. Al Roker going to Iceland looking at the glaciers and geysers, and looking at renewable energy.

Ann Curry got to 16,000 ft and turned back, However the Special Reports provided a amazing insight into the changes going on across the world. Well worth a watch. Go to: today.msnbc.msn.com and search for "Ends of the Earth" or click on the Green section. You will see the struggle Ann had going up the mountain and she is quite a healthy person. Not that I am trying to knock what chris is doing but it will be a struggle.

It will be a struggle - I think its a far bigger challenge than he has really presented it as, with all the joking around about it and everything - I would imagine in private he is taking it a bit more seriously. I am really looking forward to seeing what happens.

Rachel is going too isn't she? That will be fascinating as well.

Don't know if Mr Harris will object to me putting this on here but as it's not that usual "giving" website he may not be so antsy - also I'm guessing he's too busy being a father at the minute!

Anyway here's the link for you to be able to sponsor Chris

We really should support him, plus it's for a good cause.

I'm going to cut back on the ciggies for a few days and have donated a tenner.

Why not give up smoking and donate a portion of the thousands that you will save per year?

Not really just fed up of your constant abuse of smokers. We know how you feel so give it a rest! I thought I'd done something good and you belittled it - as always!

I have to say, this is going to be an exception to my usual no-donations-to-blanket-charity-events stance, and I intend to donate. I actually feel quite emotionally invested in Chris and Rachel reaching the top.

I was only joking by the way.

I will probably try and donate if I can do so after this month.

OK, I've spent 5 minutes now messing around with the rednoseday.com site and I've repeatedly gotten to FAQs but it won't load the answer to "How can I pay with money from abroad?" and I've lost my patience! Why did I give up beer? Tofu, if you see this, copy and paste it for me please.

Either use your credit card online at www.rednoseday.com, or go to a bank, and arrange a transfer into a/c 37706136, sort code 60-30-06. Please make sure that the reference is 'International'. Cheques should be made payable to ‘Red Nose Day 2009 (International)’ and sent to our offices in London, 89 Albert Embankment, London SE1 7TP.

They were just saying that if you could go via the Radio 1 web site that'd be brilliant so they can see how many listeners donate in relation to the total number of people who do: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/chrismoyles ... b_09.shtml

No doesn't look like it - the only ones listed to sponsor are the celebrities and you can search for fundraisers, but she doesn't show up on that either.

Indeed but don't push it. I'll dole out compliments sparingly so people don't get used to them. Now you're not due for another until 2012.
