I know it was for the Brit Awards and there were some great tunes in it (special mention for Stereophonics in particular) but what was the point of it? As much as I love the Golden Hour I couldn't help but feel that it was devalued by being used to plug the awards. I'm all for diversity and moving with the times but this was the BBC pandering to the demands of hype that has become customary with the Awards. However times have changed. We're not in the 90s any more. The Brits isn't as big as it used to be and it seems that this desperation by the music moguls at the BBC to imply that it is still 'the big one' did cheapen the Golden Hour for me.

What are everyone else's thoughts?

If the Brits isn't "the big one", what has overtaken it? It is the single biggest achievment event in the British music industry, and is rightly recognised as such by Britain's premier music radio station, Radio 1. I do agree with you that as a media event it isn't as big as it used to be, but in reducing its media impact somewhat I think it has regained a bit of integrity - a little bit anyway.

As for the promotion of it on R1, well, biggest event, biggest broadcaster - it makes sense really. They tend to concentrate their coverage to promotion of the category which the listeners are voting for, which again seems reasonable. Not much point in being the voting conduit for an award if you don't promote the nominees and make every effort to get as many people in the vote as possible.

The Golden Hour yesterday was extraneous to the main thrust of R1's Brits coverage, but it was great to hear some different songs for a change. I enjoyed it greatly.

I don't see the problem myself, if I was Radio 1 controller I'd let them be far more flexable with what they played and seeing as the Golden Hour is one of the most popular features of the show I'd let them do a special Golden Hour every show TBH.

I know that the thing that makes the Moyles show specialy is the lack of music and the reliance on the banter, but the Golden Hour is a music feature that relies on the personalities of the team - thats why I like it, it combines music with the individuals presenting.

I think The Golden Hour is best kept to Fridays - that way it stays fresh and popular. I also think that as much as we slate the playlist, if they were allowed to play what they like all the time then it would detract from the point of the Golden Hour.

I agree. I listen to my local station at 10 if I'm off and they do a nostalgia chart. They've been doing if for years and it got so tedious that they had to change it to the top 5 from one year and the top 5 from another but it's still tedious. The Golden Hour has never become tedious in my eyes. Even the Tedious Link hasn't become tedious (some irony there) because it is a daily helping of something from back in the day whether it be from the 90s or a few years ago.

I can't deny that I didn't love the Golden Hour yesterday as I stated before but I just thought that it was cheapened a little by being wheeled out early for the Brit Awards. I can't wait for tomorrow morning's lineup. I'm off uni for 'reading week' at the moment so I can listen to the whole thing first time round instead of looking at the running order and listening again although that doesn't usually stop me

IIRC for the last few years R1 has devoted the whole week to the Brits and even only played British music during the daytime shows - just having one Golden Hour devoted to it is a step down from theis rather than 'pandering to the hype'

I enjoyed the Golden Hour. It was good to have the twist of the year too. And the songs were great, especially in the second half.

It COULD get out of hand, but I think it won't. This was a one off.

Apologies, what I meant was is that it would be nice to play some random tunes, every so often, that weren't on the playlist.
