Bear in mind it has been reported by The Sun.

If Radio 1 are seriously even thinking about putting Reggie Yates or Grimey on breakfast how many listeners will be lost in the first week, 7 million?

p.s - Dont shoot the messenger + Scott Mills is 34 too so would have to go too?

Chris (34)
Jo (43)
Edith (34)
Scott (34)
Zane (35)
Colin (31)
Vernon Kay (34)
Sara Cox (34)
Nihal (37)
Pete Tong ( 48 )
Westwood (51)
Anne Nightingale (66)
Judge Jules (42)
Trevor Nelson (40)
Aled H Jones (32)

Would they be off too?

Why do execs always come up with this stupid idea? It seems to come round once every few years and always has the same result - dismal failure.

Seriously, do this and you'll get yourself the sack for losing a ridiculous amount of listeners.

I can see why, on paper, BBC management would want to replace Moyles. As the article says, his audience have definitely grown with him - but I can't see the younger (and therefore more targeted) end of the audience 'getting' many references on the show. Stuff like Roy Walker, the playing of lots of old TV themes, the tenancy to prefer slightly older music and being initially slow to catch on to new stuff won't play in his favour - even though these are all things I (/we?) want from the breakfast show.

It'd be a disaster to get rid of Moyles (and his listeners, who'd probably all give up and go to Radio 2 / 6music), but unfortunately I can see the top level of management wanting to get rid of him. I don't mean Andy Parfitt - I'm referring to those higher than him that just see Radio 1 as a 'youth' station.

Well they see it that way because that is what it IS. If Moyles' show has matured with him, and also his audience, then perhaps it makes sense to move it to Radio 2, and retire Wogan with dignity before he falls off his chair. After all, Radio 1 IS the "youth" station, whether we like it or not many of us simply aren't the audience that their remit says they must target.

I hope they don't though. I knew I was getting old the first time I saw a new Volvo and thought "ooh, thats a nice looking car" - when I start listening to Radio 2 (which I will if they shift Moyles over there), the process will have become complete.

I think it's really unlikely they replace Wogan with Moyles, even if he does retire and there's a space available, they'll go for a safer option. Wogan has a huge number of dedicated fans and there'd be outrage if he was replaced with Moyles.

I see what you mean in relation to it being a youth station. Whatever the classification, I think unfortunately the breakfast show is in danger of being replaced by someone younger - and it'll probably flop.

Well, the only one of the DJs aged under 30 who I regularly listen to and enjoy would be Greg James. If they take Chris off the breakfast show I'm going to have to find myself somewhere else to spend my mornings. Having said that, I'm waaaaay outside of their target audience so I'm proving their point really.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that any changes are imminent.

"Station bosses privately admit their best-loved presenters — like breakfast show DJ Chris Moyles — are no longer in the same age group as their listeners."

So they think this privately then ring up The Sun to let them know?

The london paper is also reporting this.

i have to say what load of b*ll*cks, i'm 25 and dont think theres anything wrong with moyles, i've been listenin to hin since i was 14 for gawds sake.

it has shown time and time again that youngsters also like classic music, why do these moronic execs of these radio stations meddle when its not neccessary.

i just think its lunacy if they axe moyles, especially as its the most popular breakfast show theyve had since Evans in the 90s

Radio 1's audience is getting older but to me this is different situation to the early 90s when Bannister/Dann had to act or else risk (in the worst case scenario) privatisation.

The station's demographic may be skewing older but that is more to do with the fact commercial radio is in a pretty dire state and there are those who may be out of the R1 age group but don't fell old enough for Radio 2 and have little or no commercial alternative.

Yes Moyles has some material that isn't 'strictly' target but at the core listening time (school run etc) the content is generally relevant and even the stuff that isn't still seems to get a good reaction on text/email from all age groups. If they are still attracting a youth audience then the age of the DJ is irrelevant, Annie Nightingale is still around and I'm sure (if he was alive) John Peel would be too.

John Peel's relationship with Radio 1 wasn't exactly healthy before he died. He'd been pushed back in time slots and was worried that he couldn't keep up. The general consensus with those close to him (if his semi-autobiography is anything to go by) was that Radio 1 were trying to push him out. Of course, he was seen as a god after he died...

I think Annie Nightingale is sadly in the same category. She's on once a week from 5-7am, which is a pretty shitty slot in my opinion.
Put shortly, Radio 1 really do seem to be going for the younguns these days.

To be fair the only talk show I would listen to is Chris Moyles and any other time I will flick through stations for music. All the young people in Birmingham listen to Galaxy, Aston FM, Hot FM or Stingdem and I have never spoke to someone (in real life) my age, that listens to Chris Moyles. It's not like they don't already have alternatives. Radio 1 should be unique and if it wanted to get the attention of the teenagers I know it would have to play none stop music. I do listen to Heart FM though so maybe I don't count but they really play classic choooons.

When I were a lad it was DLT, Mayo, Wright etc...none of whom were under 30 at the time and still considered relevant. Also what about Mark & Lard? They were hardly teenagers yet produced some of the most memorable "youth radio" I've ever heard.

Can I get a Biggidy Biggidy Bong y'all?

Was that before some Volvos were released that actually are nice?

That's a nice car. And I'm only 25.

...again, I'm 25 and I listen to Radio 2 sometimes. When you have a choice between Scott Mills and Chris Evans - and Evans show is actually good - there's very little time needed to decide. Also Radcliffe and Maconie, Jonathan Ross, Mark Lamarr (who I think is probably a bastard in real life, but is quite good on the radio)... actually, they have more decent presenters than radio one do. They just don't have Chris.

I still can't sing the praises of Geoff Lloyd on Virgin enough. It's like Mills fir grown ups. Hmm that doesn't really sell it well. He's very good anyway. I urge people to give him a listen.

Must'n Grumble ;)

I agree, I mean if they're going to get rid of DJ's over 30, how about songs performed by people over 30, that'd be most of their playlist gone then

We'll see, I imagine Moyles will be one of the last to go anyway, he's still pulling in the listeners, not sure about the others though (although seeing as most are over 30 then that means there's no DJ's left.

The young DJ on Radio 1 I do like is Greg James & that's mainly because he does what Clive Warren used to do on the Early Bit (pop in & then do a task Chris set him )

Ah, Simon Mayo was brilliant. Still is from what I've heard, but I don't get to listen to him.
