I'll stick to what I know... my tennis bet.

Also, at 33/1, Jenson Button is worth a couple of quid, that car looks awesome so far.

Yea but reliability is a factor - they haven't had the chance to give it a good lengthy run

Reliability is indeed a big factor.. but for the sake of a couple of quid, I think it's worth it.

I've never really been a betting man, which surprises me as I have a fairly addictive personality (nothing is ever done in moderation, EVER!)

When I go to the greyhound racing, I always pick the dog that has my favourite colours, then bet 50p to win as thats the only bet I really understand! I won a massive £12.50 last time I bet on the dog with my favourite coloured jersey on! Didn't even nearly cover the £70 quid i spent on booze, and £25 for the taxi home................... and I had to suffer bloody Peterborough to add insult to injury!

You may as well set your money on fire as spend it in the bookies :)

Mind you that could be because he's a raving perv (I forgot to put that in my message above.)

Neptune Collange is the one I like for the Gold Cup. But I'm easily swayed by a grey.

I misread that last bit and thought Foots had been persuading you to do something you didn't want.

Ah crap. Den of iniquity pulled up when he was quite well placed.

But e/w was only on 1-3 in that race so it may as well have come last really.

Stupid horses.

Ah, but I backed him at 7-1 to come fourth with RidiculousBet.Com. So actually he might as well have won.

For someone who has very little understanding of betting, where does the term "each way" come from and why does it describe places one to three?

Ok, an each way bet is basically 2 bets in one. You've a bet for your selection to win and for it to place - which can be 2nd, 3rd or 4th (depending on the number of runners, in today's Gold Cup, it was up to 3rd) and this bet is usually at a fraction of the price you'll see for it to win (often 1/4).

A good example from wikipedia

A £10 each-way single on a 10-1 selection in a horse race and paying 1/4 the odds a place 1,2,3 would cost £20 (£10 on it to win, £10 on it to place).

* Returns on the win part of the bet would be £10 × (10/1 + 1) = £110
* Returns on the place part of the bet would be £10 × (10/4 + 1) = £35
* Total returns would be £110 + £35 = £145 if the horse won the race, but just £35 if the horse only finished second or third.

OK - I kind of get that, cheers Bruvva.. this is why I don't very often bet!
