I don't like street view if it's someone's house. If it's historical buildings, public buildings or something like that, I'm fine with it. Houses, that's just creepy.

I think its more the idea that people think its great, and enjoy poking around for absolutely no purpose other than morbid curiosity. Its not so much the thing itself that concerns me, more the type of society which embraces it.

I found it daft that Coronation Street - Probably more televised than Downing Street is unavailable for street level viewing, yet yer able to poke your nose into people's windows anywhere else in this city! Technically what with it being privately owned they're not gonna give you pictures.

Having said all that I have no problem with it, I've (sadly) been hooked on it this morning, looking up places I know of, the novelty will wear off I'm sure, if I wanted to be a perv, I'd join the paps. *click*

I suppose its kinda the same thing as when Google Earth launched - people clicked onto the things they see every day anyways and go "look - theres my car! Wooooooooooo!"

I'm not sure how that is morbid though, or why its bad for society to embrace it. Maybes im being naive.

Or maybe I'm over reacting - all I know is that I find it at best creepy, and at worst seriously worrying.

They aren't maps though are they? They aren't giving you any information that could be useful to anyone, they are just there so that people can snoop.

I think it's great, it would definitley help if I was looking for directions to somewhere I hadn't been before (I'm useless when it comes to maps), so I think in that way it does help. Why is it worrying so many people when they're only pictures of public spaces?

I think it makes a difference that in order to see my house from the street you have to be going past. Its like if you knocked on my door I'd open it and you'd see me - but I won't put pictures of myself on the internet, I dont think its the same thing at all.

Anyway, like I said, its not so much the thing itself that freaks me out as the apparent universal acceptance of this cultural shift towards everything and everyone being constantly accessible at all times. I am obviously very very old.

My house can be clearly seen and my lounge curtains are open. However nothing can be seen inside and my house is pretty much right on the street save for a small front garden. I don't consider it an invasion of privacy. I have nothing to hide and unless someone knows my address they aren't gonna find me. People say it could be used to plan crimes. Possibly but the picture on there is at least six months old, possibly more. Not even stupid people would use intel that old.

The following conversation:

Me: "Jackie can be a man's name, like Jackie Charlton."
Cat: "Who?"
Me: "You know, the footballer."
Cat: "I've never heard of him."
Me: "He's Bobby Charlton's brother."
Cat: "Nope, don't know him either."
Me: "Er, they were in the 1966 World Cup winning team."
Cat: "I don't know anyone who was in that team except Gary Lineker."
