Actually, I happen to think Ferguson is a shrewd character who knows exactly how to play these games. Rafa's outburst around New Year was quickly followed by a slump in form that Man United fully capitalised on and Liverpool still haven't really recovered fully. If Liverpool don't win the league this year, that outburst will doubtless be remembered in the same way the Keegan on was all those years ago now.

Allardyce, on the other hand, is most definitely a colossal dick.

Riise did score some important goals (Barca away's another one) but the negatives far outweighed the positives with him, both Aurelio and Insua are better both defensively and going forward - there's no way Riise would have done what Aurelio did with the freekick on Tuesday night. Also, Liverpool have a lot less money than people think, they're laden with debt after the takeover and the company that Hicks owns in the US has already defaulted on sizeable loan payments in the last month (and it's not just Liverpool with that problem, look at the losses the company that owns United made recently, 45 million and 650 million in debt).

It's silly season once again. That old ditty about "Old Firm to England" is doing the rounds again. Some guy at Bolton wants a two tier Premiership, each of 18 teams. So the 20 teams in the Premiership at the time, plus another 14 from the Championship would be invited to join along with Celtic and Rangers.

Won't happen.

1. The big clubs in the current setup won't want it. They'll lose revenue from the drop to an 18 team league. Plus there's that small threat that the Glasgow giants have the potential given a level playing field of cash to break into that top four cartel and someone would miss out on the Champions League.

2. The smaller Premiership clubs won't want it. More chance of losing their top division status. Those less likely to get relegated won't want the drop in revenue either.

3. The Championship clubs won't want it. Although they'd probably benefit from the increase in money that they'll supposedly get (I don't see how, you're still the second tier whatever label you put on it) 14 of them will be happy while there's another 10 who will complain about Celtic and Rangers jumping in front of them. There's a guy at Crystal Palace who says that would be fine if Celtic and Rangers pay 100 million to them! Yeah right, get real.

4. Celtic and Rangers might not want it. They're trading guaranteed Europe for being stuck in England. Sure, the money is better but would that make up for it? I know I'd much rather watch Celtic v Barcelona than Celtic v Barnsley. No offense to Barnsley you just begin with B. Kinda where the comparison with Barca stops.

5. The Scottish teams won't want it. On the one hand, they'll have a shot at winning the league! On the other hand, no one will watch or care and most of them will go to the wall. To be honest, if things continue to go the way they're going up here, they might win the league in another few seasons anyway. Both Celtic and Rangers are falling backwards. So really, what's in it for them another couple of seasons won't bring?

6. The police won't want it. Seriously, do you think Greater Manchester Police want the Rangers fans back in their jurisdiction any time soon after last year's UEFA Cup final?! And I'm sure the return of the Celtic morons who want to sing about Bobby Sands and the IRA are more than welcome too.

7. UEFA won't allow it. They've already stated there'll be no cross border football. Which conveniently ignores the likes of Monaco having a team in the French league and the Northern Irish city of Derry playing in the Republic of Ireland's league. They're not the only teams doing that mind you.

I did have a slight chuckle at the idea of the English Championship big live match being Cardiff v Swansea a couple of weeks ago.

From a purely football perspective, Celtic and Rangers playing against the likes of Man United, Liverpool et al more often would be a good thing. But given all the "issues" and the fact that this is really only about money... I'm pretty much against it.

A league is a different kettle of fish from a cup competition. Celtic and Rangers playing in the premiership week in week out? English teams visiting every other week? The adrenaline rush would soon wear off - and it would be a disaster.

Only because of the current gulf in money. In real terms, only Man United and Liverpool could really claim to be bigger. And even on money terms both have featured in the top 20 in the world.
