The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Hi guys,
Havn't been on here in a while I've been so busy! Anyway I'm sure you'll all know Moyles' longing gag on trying to get the BBC Emergency tape to kick in after so many seconds of silence. Well Vernon Kay has gone and trumped him this morning, albeit not by choice. A power cut in Vernon's show left a 36 second gap which then was followed by the infamous "old" emergency tape. It took 30 mins before Vernon was back on this time from broadcasting house.

It was an experience to listen too and I wonder whether Chris will make reference to it on Tuesdays show? We'll have to see.

If you want to hear what it sounded like I've gone to the trouble to compile it onto YouTube, cheers guys!

Yeah it was really quite good. I'd imagine whoever job it was to update the back-up tape will get into alot of trouble...Nice to hear the scottish bloke back though.

They've had an electrical fault all day so are still broadcasting from broadcasting house. So are 1Xtra and apparently Asian Network. You can actually view the radio 1 presenters (at the moment) on the Radio 2 webcam because they are in Dermots normal studio.

I was trying to work out what you meant by that, but having said that the songs are 2-3 years old which as we know is a "no-no" on Radio 1 these days

The production was what I was refering to. Neither of the voices on the back-up tape are used anymore as main station voices and for any radio station its a huge 'no-no' especially as those voiceovers wont be licenced for use of Radio 1 anymore.

Oh right, I see I misunderstood you there. I forgot that certain jingles/voice overs are only limited for a certain period of time :D

a few questions that hopefully can be answered.

1. What happens after a hour. The emergency tape lasts a hour. Which is what chris mentioned on air one time.
2. Does it still take 10-15 minutes to disable the emergency tape like was mentioned before.
3. Is it still a tape or is it now a computer.

On another note. Where would radio 2, 6 asian network and possibly radio 7 the go if there studio's broke down.
Would they come too yalding house. Yalding house only has 4 studios.

It loops.

No, the moment something from the studio feed becomes active (noise), the emergency tape immediately stops and resets to the beginning incase its needed again. This worked slightly differantly yesterday because they moved buildings, but in normal situations this is what happens.

It is likely to now be a computer at the tranmitter or transmitter site. There may also be a CD back-up incase the computer fails.

It has more than 4 if you include news studios. Radio 2/6 Music & Asian Network are currently in Western House, next door is Broadcasting house which is the house of Radio 3 & Radio 4, it would go next door.

If that fails, they would go to 5 Live at Television Center.

If that fails again, they would go to Radio 1.

If that then failed again then it would probably go to BBC London.

Reading that list of what would happen if everything failed in turn made me feel a bit sick. A bit like it would be an alien invasion or something. I used to be scared of the Test Card when I was a kid (in fact truth be told I still am), so maybe that's somehow related...

On a side note, I wonder if Mark & Lard ever set off the tape with their "stop......carry on"? Johnny1989 might remember.

I really wish wireman2004 would take some * English lessons.

It happened twice, once (I think) before they handed over to Moyles (which is a clip on here somewhere, I think on the old Mark & Lard thread) and on their last ever show, they finished a few minutes early with Stop.... but never did the carry on bit, they played a Radio 1 jingle which grinds to a halt & then 30 seconds of silence before Outkast's Hey-ya kicked in (it was always that tune back then). The clips in the archive if you want to hear it :D

I've actually heard that last show more than once, so I must have heard that at the end...maybe I just didn't twig it was the emergency tape!

No, I don't see why he would. It didn't affect him or his team, they also won't want to draw attention to it anymore than it already has.

The jingles were rather short back then that's what makes it's harder to tell :D

Anyway here's the clip from said Mark & Lard show, for anyone who's interested:
