So Fawlty Towers is on GOLD for the entire series.

I personally love it, even though it has to be about 30 years old. The jokes are hilarious and John Cleese plays a blinder.

A few of my mates doubt it as classic comedy and just say its dated. What do you all think?

It is a classic, but some of the jokes have dated, it's inevitable.

It's still as funny as it was. I would say it's third in my all time favourite sitcoms behind Only Fools and Blackadder... and I would have loved to have watched that programme, but I don't have UK Gold. Bummer.

Oh, and it's Flowery Twats. Duh.

I keep watching the Only Fools re-runs of GOLD. I got fed up of it when they used ot show it all the time on BBC. Now it hasn't been shown on BBC for ages it is hilarious again. This weekend was the riot episode where the break apart to let Dell and his Capri go through.

Fawlty Towers is on my top 3 as well.

Nope.. Only Fools > Blackadder (series 2-4) > Flowery Twats.

How can you not include series two, it was great! Admittedly not quite as great as three and four, but deserving of being listed with them I think.

Wow, I actually agree with one of your comparisons for once. I would also include series 2 of Blackadder, though.

I think Flowery Twats is, to an extent equal to Blackadder, however, I think if you narrow down to just series three and four, Blackadder wins.

Only Fools doesn't cut it.

I think Only Fools has been overplayed/repeated/shown on so many clips shows that it's lost some of it's appeal. There are loads of great 70s comedies that you don't hear about much these days - Butterflies is one of my favourites.

I have the Rising Damp boxset, that was very good, as was The Good Life (the few that I've seen when I've been able to watch UK Gold.)

I understand why people think Only Fools has been overplayed and were it anything else, I would probably agree... but to me, it's the only comedy (in fact probably the only programme) that I can watch over and over. I have the boxset, which I have watched in full three times since I got it a couple of years ago and I'm nowhere near tired of it, despite having seen most episodes at probably four or five times prior to that. I don't know of another comedy that fires jokes that funny at you in quick succession episode after episode and neither do I know one that can turn comedy into tragedy so seamlessly and vice versa. That is why, to me, Only Fools and Horses is the the best comedy ever written (and yes I only go back to around the seventies and I'm basing my opinion on what I know and have seen).

Well, of course comedy is subjective. But the continuing popularity of, and affection for, Only Fools says a lot for it. Personally I wouldn't bother watching reruns if they were on - it just never caught my imagination.
