Why hold a World Series and only invite North Americans?

Because if they invited the rest of the world the Japanese would tonk them. They are much better at baseball than the Americans. Just like the rest of the world is much better at all the sports we invented than we are now. Except we aren't afraid to still take part.

oh oh oh *raises hand* I have a question. Do Americans really get prescribed those ridiculous braces with all the headgear? You see them used as comedy devices in US films/tv but they don't seem to exist in this country. (Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.) Also, is a retainer the same thing as braces?

Some people might think this is good, but it makes for a frosty journey. Also those touch screen displays in the back of cabs play the same interview over and over and over. I pretty much knew them word for word after a while! I'm guessing the rudeness is a major city thing, it's just that it's worse in NYC than most places.

Why are people from New York so rude? They make Londoners seem hospitable! You take a trip in a yellow taxi and there's not so much as a moment of banter or chat with the driver. Have you been to most places? I can honestly say I've never had a problem in either New York or London with people being rude. As for the taxis - it's because the drivers barely speak English. And, there are volume controls on the touch screens and you can also change what you're watching or shut it off entirely. It really isn't meant to be some sort of torture device.

I live close to London and work in West London, and my experience is that Londoners would quite happily tut and get annoyed if you hold them up by being inconsiderate for having, say a heart attack, yet would be the model of compassion if a cute little dog was in distress. This I don't really mind as I'm pretty much a miserable bastard most of the time. In New York it seemed the same only worse. I actually found it quite amusing to be honest, but being the first time for me in New York it took me a little by surprise. I suppose we could have turned the in cab monitors down, but again this became a running joke amongst us as to who could remember the next line!

It shouldn't have done. It's the stereotypical viewpoint of New Yorkers - that they're all rude. You know, like all Americans are fat and all British people have bad teeth. I think people go to NYC expecting/hoping that they'll be pushed/shoved and spat on just so they can go away and say how rude all the people were. Again, I've never had a problem in either city.

That's kind of what I meant to be honest, it lived up to the stereotype, which in my experience isn't the case with most cities. Most cities seem to be a watered down version of the stereotype at worst/best.

I at least fulfill peoples expectations of the English if my latest dental bills are anything to go by! They're shot to pieces.

My friend had one of those Nic! I think a retainer is a plastic gumshield type thing that you wear after your brace has done the trick to make sure your teeth don't move back, but I might be wrong!

Yes that's a retainer, you get them over here too, I had one when I was younger it has a 'plate' but like a gumshield and then wires hooking it to your teeth if that makes sense. It's not just for after having braces (or train tracks) - I never had those, just different retainers.

I just had a thing with a wire across the front of my teeth that was removable, different from the 'train tracks' - but my orthodontist and everyone else called it a 'brace'. hence my confusion about this 'retainer' word.

I got the impression that New Yorkers were a sort of friendly arrogant strange mix. I think it comes from the pride they have in their city.

Admittedly, I was too busy being impressed by the city to let the arrogant bit bother me! But no one there annoyed me, so that probably helped.
