So do I - I have a lot of time for Massa, particularly after the final race last year when he thought he was World Champion when he crossed the line, but by the time he'd finished his parade lap, Lewis had moved up a place. He showed a lot of sportsmanship at a time when it's hard to think of anything more bitterly disappointing. Not that I wouldn't hope he was OK otherwise.

I was talking about this with a friend of mine at the weekend. Getting skelped by debris is, normally, a freak occurrence. Of course it is, what's the chances of a bit falling off one car and hitting the driver 10 seconds down the road?

If that's the case... how come this is the second incident in a week? That poor guy Surtees that was killed in Formula 2 just last week by the stray tyre.

But then this isn't the first time a "freak accident" has happened twice in quick succession. I still feel sorry for poor Roland Ratzenberger. F1 enthusiasts know who he is, but generally his death in 1994 is overshadowed by the fact that just 24 hours later Ayrton Senna was killed too. Two crashes, two days, two deaths.

That all lead to changes. To be fair, it lead to sensible changes that really should have been in place to start with. Maybe changes need to be made here too, but at the moment I'm not sure what they could be. Close up the *? No chance.

But then, I'm not an expert in these things. Maybe there is something they can do without compromising the sport itself. And if that's the case, they probably should.

Not to forget that a wheel flew off Alonso's car in the race as well, and if I understand it right that was down to human error. Luckily I think Alonso knew what was coming so slowed down and got off the racing line.

Renault have been suspended over that. Apparently the mechanic knew that the wheel wasn't on properly, and the conversations from the pit crew radios confirm that - but they didn't radio Alonso to tell him and when he radioed them to say there was something wrong they still didn't say anything to him about it. If he did know, its because he saw what was happening and used his brain. That there wasn't a serious accident is no thanks to his pit crew.

Good for Ferrari, I rather think it's more likely to be Marc Gené though.

"Ferrari intends to entrust Michael Schumacher with Felipe Massa's car for as long as the Brazilian driver is not able to race," a statement said.

Blimey.

Have to say I'm looking forward to Valencia now though.

What if Massa never returns?:D

It'll be very interesting to see Schumi back on the track.

I thought Schumacher's cmments were interesting - sounds to me as though he wouldn't have sought the return, but was asked, and didn't feel he could turn it down for reasons of loyalty and integrity. Although of course he also mentioned that his personal competitiveness would be a factor too! It's a great story though, and will be even better if/when Masa returns.

I'm not sure if Michael S returning is a good thing or not. He ended his career on a wicked note, might be a shame to come back now. Epsecially if he doesn't drive too great. But i suppose having said that, if he wins, he'll be a hero.

I guess it depends on how much you decide to believe him abut his reasons for doing it. If it's genuinely about helping out his team and friend, then it doesn't matter where he places to me at least. However if it's about seeing another chance for glory and jumping at it, then if he doesn't do well and damages his reputation then I won't be feeling too sorry for him.

I would tend to think it's the former in this case, as he doesn't really have anything to gain by doing this (he's got nothing left to prove) but stands to lost quite a lot. It was certainly interesting that his manager said only the day before that he was 200% certain he wouldn't get back in a car: obviously this was a pretty quick decision - or very clever PR depending on your level of cynicism.

I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't do too well in Valencia simply down to the lack of chance to drive the car, but if he's staying in it until Massa is fit to return then you can bet he'll just get better and better.

I can't help thinking that because its so clear that he has nothing to prove in racing terms that his reasons for agreeing to this are probably genuine. My cynicism levels are usually pretty high, but my bullshit-alert hasn't bleeped once during this whole thing yet!
